Hugo: Hi Chris. Internet E-mail allows anyone sending mail to specify an address at any valid domain in the From line. This is not illegal. For example, I can send a message and tell the mail server to put billgates@microsoft.com in the From line, and in most cases the mail server will send that message out. I do not need to connect to Microsoft's servers to send from a microsoft.com address. The only thing mail servers are required to check for the From address is that the domain specified is valid.

Hugo: It is very common for a spammer to specify one of their recipients in the From field of their mailings. This causes all replies and rejection notices to go to that address. As far as mail admins are concerned, it is universally recognized that the From line on bulk mail isn't really the address that the message originated from. I have never seen blacklisting occur for a domain because a spammer specified an address at that domain in the From field.

Hugo: When someone sends out mail and places one of your addresses in the From line, it does not mean that the person sending that message has the ability to read your mail. In fact, any replies or rejection notices go to your inbox, and the person who sent the message out never gets to see the response.

Hugo: This is the way internet E-mail has always functioned, and there is no way to prevent someone from using your E-mail address in the From line of messages that they send.
