Illustrator tutorial: varied line weight with the mouse

http://www.threadless.com/profile/231200/Leroy_Hornblower/369927/Illustrator_tutorial_varied_line_weight_with_the_mouse

Starr226 was asking how I created my lines, so I’ve decided to make a quick tutorial showing how I create varied lines in Illustrator using the mouse.

To start off I draw my character using the pen tool. Right now the illustration uses nothing but boring flat lines.

Next I select the line that I want to vary the thickness of. Here I have selected the line that outlines the body. I will now copy this line, and use the Paste in Front (Ctrl + f on the PC) function. This will paste a copy of the line right on top of the original.

Now using the direct select tool I locate one of the endpoints of my line, and I click and drag over the end of the line to select both end points. You have to actually click and drag the direct select tool over the end to select both the end points for the top and bottom lines. Just clicking on it will only select the endpoint for the line pasted on top. Once the endpoints are selected I will now join them together (Ctrl + j on the PC).

I now repeat this for the other side of the line, and join these two endpoints together. The two overlapping lines should now be joined together from both ends.

Now using the direct select tool I click (don’t drag) on an area of the line that I want to thicken. This selects just the top line, and now I can start moving it out or in however wide I like. I do this for all the areas I want to add thickness to. When I’m done doing this I add a fill to the lines, and Voila!

I don't know if it's the best way to do this, but it's my way.

I’m planning on submitting a picture of an animal wearing an eye patch for the Lollapalooza competition, but I don’t want to just submit a picture of a boring domestic animal. I’m looking to catch something exotic.

Preferably I’d like to catch something large like a bear, mountain lion, tapir, or a Chinese water deer, but I’m also fine with something smaller, and more manageable… like a badger. So I’ve placed a trap outside (pictures below) with a most desirable prize package as bait.

Here’s the prize package. It includes a never before opened Tamagotchi, circa 1997, and a Mr. T (A Team) trading card from 1983. One can only assume this will attract many critters to my trap.

And here’s the trap with the prize package inside. I’ll keep you guys posted if/when I catch something.

How would I go about catching something larger? My current trap is only good for catching pygmy bears and lions. Not the full sized ones :(

My last winning design went up for sale 672 days ago, so it has definitely been a long wait to say the least. So thank you everyone who helped make me a winner again. I was beginning to wonder if I could even compete with all you new and talented artists.

I’ve got a funny story about this shirt (I’m lying. It’s neither funny nor interesting). So I opened my email to find two messages from Threadless. One telling me this shirt had won, and another telling me that my most recent submission had been declined. Talk about pooping in the punch bowl! It should have been a happy day for me, but instead I could do nothing but stew over my first declined submission. Anyone else ever find both the best and worst Threadless emails waiting for them?
