In May of 2007 I screen grabbed the Threadless home page when my design, Adorable Disaster got printed. At that time, if you were lucky enough to be printed, your design and name basked in the spotlight for a solid week. It was a pretty amazing feeling. The product photos were a lot of fun too.

Flash forward to March 2012. Here's the current Threadless home page:

My new design, Happy Birds was printed on Monday. That design is represented on the main page as a small square of cropped artwork in the lower right corner, next to some of the other new prints. You have a few seconds to click on the design, before all of the new designs slide off the screen, revealing a totally different Threadless feature.

I'm not going to try to convince Threadless to go back to the old days, but dang it, getting printed back in the day was way, way, way more exciting. Am I right? Or am I right?

Art Direct Each Other!

My close, personal friend and associate, Josh Agerstrand came up with a great idea for a Threadless challenge a while back. This idea was placed on the backburner where it slowly simmered. After a full year had passed, I wrote a letter to Mr. Agerstrand, urging him to take the idea off the backburner, place it on the front burner and then turn the heat up all the way. Mr.Agerstrand agreed and allowed me to help officially launch the challenge.

Plain and simple, the concept behind "Art Direct Each Other" is that each person plays the role of an art director. YOU choose someone on Threadless whose work you really admire to be your partner and if that person agrees to work with you, you will art direct him or her to create a Threadless design. Your partner, in turn, will do the same with you. In Mr.Agerstrand’s own words, “essentially you need somebody you respect to boss you around.”

Once people are locked into pairs, each person will pitch up to 3 different, written concepts for his or her partner to choose from. The artist must pick one of the concepts and work under his or her art director’s supervision to the completion of the design. Much like in a professional situation, the art director may make his or her artist partner create something that he or she may not normally produce.

Once a concept is chosen by the artist, the artist will send a rough sketch to his or her art director partner. The art director is then allowed up to 5 revisions throughout the design process. Each pair will be given 3 weeks or so to complete their designs.

This should be fun with interesting results, so find a partner and sign up!

The sign-up deadline is Friday, October 28, 2011. Final deadline information will be posted on that date.

Dear Threadless,

I currently have my 4th design submission up for voting since Threadless began revealing scores early. I've now come to the conclusion that I absolutely HATE HATE HATE this new system.

As sad as it may sound, submitting designs at Threadless has always been a thrilling experience for me. It’s always been a lot of fun seeing how people react to your work, reading comments and waiting to see what your score was going to be. But now, in all seriousness, I find submitting designs here to be a disheartening and discouraging experience and it kind of makes me not want to do it anymore.

These days, instead of checking my final score at the end of a design’s run and experiencing a few minutes of disappointment, I now get seven, full days of pure agony. “How come my score just keeps going down?” I say to myself. It’s never the other way around. There’s never any wild fluctuation where the score might be 3.8 one minute and 2.2 the next. If the visible score went up and down in an unpredictable manner like that, it would be riveting to watch. But let’s face it, that’s not how the law of averages work, so instead, in the vast majority of instances, scores will inevitably just gradually go down. Slowly and painfully. Did I mention, it feels awful?

I can accept whatever final score I get when the design finishes scoring. If it’s not the score I hoped for, it’s never been a big deal. But what’s really the benefit of showing how scores gradually disintegrate? I don’t get it.

I always thought surprises were fun. I think most people do. Isn’t that why people wrap birthday and Christmas presents? Anticipation is exciting. How much behind the scenes magic do we really need to see here?

I’ve been submitting designs since 2005. I think if this voting system were in place when I first started out, I would have abandoned this site pretty quickly. I’m not sure why this kind of thing bothers me so much, but it does.

Make the pain go away, Threadless! Go back to keeping scores hidden!

Remember, ripping a band-aid off quickly is better than slowly peeling it off. It's A FACT!
