Monkey Around Issue 1, Vol. 4 by Mike Allred

Front: We see a "mad scientist" type (lab coat, goggles) standing in front of a chalkboard on which three empty squares are drawn in a row, surrounded by formulae and notes. The scientist is facing the board and shouting with triumph that he has finally found the
secret of the universe, and created a device capable of travelling to other layers of reality — comic books! In another balloon, he says something about the need to be careful, as any disruption or interference could lead to disaster! Behind him is a lab bench where a metal belt-like device is draped, and there is a lab monkey reaching up Curious-George-style to touch the belt.

Back: Same shot and point of view as the front, only here the scientist has turned around and is saying "Did you hear something?" and the monkey is now wearing the belt and has a crazy assortment of stuff on him: lipstick marks of a kiss on his cheek, some parts of a superhero costume (mask slung down around his neck, or a cape, or something like that), and in one hand maybe what looks like a toy train. The monkey is trying very hard not to look suspicious.

Monkey Around, Issue 2, Vol. 4 by Colleen Coover

Front: A scene that resembles the covers to old romance comics or an issue of Archie, with a guy in the foreground looking forlorn with his hand on his chin, a thought balloon over his head saying "She only had eyes for me, until HE came to town." In the background, we see a girl skipping along holding hands with the monkey, who is wearing a sweater vest or something equally twee (and, of course, wearing the belt).

Back: On the back, we see the monkey and the girl sitting at a malt shop table, drinking from the same glass with two straws, and outside the window behind them we see the guy looking anguished.

Monkey Around, Issue 3, Vol. 4 by Chris Samnee

Front: We see a superhero and his sidekick swinging over a cityscape on ropes, a caped crusader and his laughing daredevil of a sidekick. But instead of his costume being based on, let's say a "bat" for example, this superhero is *monkey*-themed. Like Adam West if he'd started in "Monkey-Man", instead. And his sidekick, dressed in coloful tights, cape, mask, and little pixie shoes, is the monkey from shirt 1.

Back: We see a millionaire playboy in ascot and smoking jacket, sitting in a chair in his sumptuous study. He's just looking up and reacting to the monkey that has come crashing through the window, and saying something like "That's it! I shall become... a MONKEY."

Monkey Around, Issue 4, Vol. 4 by Francesco Francavilla

Front: A scene that could be from a 50s monster comic or a Japanese kaiju flick, with a guy in the foreground shouting for people to run for their lives. In the middle ground we see people running in terror, and towering over it all is the monkey, here standing at least fifty feet tall.

Back: We see a guy with a pipe clutched between his teeth with his arms around a girl with a big bouffant hairdo, and an army general standing nearby, and the body of the monkey lying on the ground in the near distance, one hand hand over his stomach, the other on the ground holding a train, and piles of banana peels all around. There's a word balloon about how the monster seemed to calm down when he found that trainload of bananas, and seems to have eaten himself into a nap. Needless to say, with three adorable kittens running around, no one got any work done. But the good news is three Threadless employees adopted a kitten, so they all went to good homes! I wanted to keep at least one as an office cat, but there were complaints of allergies BOOOOO.

Photos all fixed! Maybe the Threadstaff parents of these kittens will take some photos as they grow up and let us know how they're doing.


We gave them tees to sleep on until they could go to their new homes.


This one likes to sit on people's shoulders.

***spinach pinwheels, cheese, French onion soup, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans (cooked in bacon grease), turkey, stuffing, cranberries, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, cookies, fudge.... and that was ONE day. Don't even get me started on the tacos and margaritas, bloody marys and breakfast sandwiches, and shrimp & grits and beer that I consumed the rest of the weekend.

Yesterday we launched the College! Challenge on Atrium. We’re challenging you to create a design inspired by one of 12 college mascots or symbols — Alabama, Auburn, Cal, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, LSU, Miami, UCLA, Washington, USC, or Iowa. This is really a series of challenges; we’ll print 12 separate designs, with 12 separate prize packs. And we’re trying a new timeline for submissions and voting, too. We’re accepting submissions for three weeks. Once submissions close, you can vote on all the designs for one week.

There’s been some confusion and discussion about what this challenge is all about, so here’s some clarification.

- As with all things Threadless, we’re looking for creative and original designs. The animals, art, and colors are the focus on this challenge, not the logos. If you have an idea for a bulldog, elephant, or tiger, the College! Challenge could be a good place to submit it. For example, here is what Ross was thinking when he first started brainstorming this challenge last year:


- We’re starting with these 12 schools. We hope that in the future, we can run design challenges with more schools, maybe even your favorite one or your alma mater! If this challenge goes smashingly, we’ll open it up to other schools.

- Interpret these mascots and symbols how you like. Sure you can redesign the mascot. Sure you can add some type. It’s really up to you. If your College! idea would make an awesome shirt for fans, students, alumni of these schools, then do it. As you may or may not know, I'm one of the copywriters here and working on our gargantuan site redesign project (some of you met me this weekend. Hi yous!). We know that as it stands now, the whole Threadless process ain't so clear to newcomers. So we're working to make that better!

Think back very very hard to when you were a newbie. Maybe you were just lurking around on the blogs, or maybe you were a sad panda because the awesome design you submitted got dropped from voting early. What do you know now that you wish you had known then?

Design an inspirational tee around the theme of "food fight."

Although companies that produce genetically modified organisms say they’re safe to eat, when given a choice, many animals avoid them. Rats turn their noses up at genetically modified foods, but Americans eat them every day. And even though genetically modified crops, foods, and food ingredients are banned by food companies in Europe and elsewhere, the FDA does not require the labeling of GMOs in food ingredient lists in America. The Institute for Responsible Technology is fighting against GMOs in the US. If even a small number of consumers start buying non-GMO food, grocery stores will notice and producers of GMOs will be forced to go natural once again.

Design a food fight-themed tee inspired by the push for healthier non-GMO food, and you can help fight for the health of millions of people throughout the world. Threadless will donate 25% from the sale of each tee to help The Institute for Responsible Technology bring awareness to their campaign. So. I wanted to enter this contest to win a trip to Paris, but I knew I needed some help to execute my idea. I had to create an image or illustration based on the theme "Picture Yourself in Paris." I decided to ask some fellow Threadstaff to lend a hand. Thanks to the awesome photography and photoshopping skillz of Nikki Carlson and awesome illustration skillz of Alex Solis, I was able to submit this awesome entry:



I just found out last night that my entry made the top 10! Apparently 1,800 people entered. I couldn't believe it. I started running around my house like a crazy person. Because, if I win, I win two round-trip tickets to Paris and five nights in a fancy pants hotel.
