Georgie was a tortoiseshell feline. This meant she was a mishmash of dull oranges, grays, and tans. There was no order to the coloration of her fur, it just was. My mother got her when she was nineteen years old. At that time, as my mother liked to remind me when I was nineteen and in college, she was already married and living away from her family while breeding German Shepherds, not off of government loans while lazing around in lecture halls.
From the beginning of my time, there was Georgie. There was me trying to bathe Georgie, me pulling her in the red metal radio flyer wagon that would sit out in the hot Arizona sun until the black handle was too hot for me to touch, and Georgie constantly in my mother’s lap.
“I always hated cats,” my mother said, in telling the story of how Georgie came to be. “Just sly ugly creatures, that’s all they were. German Shepherds, now those were beautiful animals. Just their musculature, their colorings, everything about a German Shepherd is perfection. And so smart. When I bred them, I had to make the fences six-feet high and then put a roof on because they could climb them. Then they figured out how to dig underneath! So I had to put the fence into the ground too. Oh, they were so smarter, much smarter and well-behaved than you kids.
But then, with all the dog food, and living in the country as we did, we had rats. That’s me and my husband, not me and your dad. Everything went wrong with your dad, fucking bastard. But back when I had money before you kids we owned our land. So someone said that I should get a cat. And there was this ugly thing I saw, and I figured, ‘well, if it can kill the rats.’ I didn’t even feed her. She could eat the rats or whatever dog food she stole, that was it. I wasn’t about to buy food for such an ugly creature. She was here to do a job.”
