This is a post to say what designs are used to much, I hear a lot about how skulls and unicorns are used to much but what else? What is your opinion on designs that shouldn't be used?? Rant away

I've been seeing a lot of Katie Couric-inspired bullshit.

All I have to say is EFF THAT.

Nothing is used too much - if you can still use it in an original way.

I'm actually kind of tired of blogs talking about tired design elements.

Bramish you make a very good point I will say its difficult to do with some things though wouldn't you agree? I mean your original design with a skull for example would have to be phenomenal, like the skull made out of candy it was really good and unique

FrickenAwesome you also make a good point I am actually trying to get some ideas that are used to much so I can incorporate them into an idea I have

Hour Glass

Clichés are useful in that they're recognizable and easily understood. The trouble is they're overused, tired and boring. We're all hard wired to respond to the new, we can't help but notice oddity, difference, and newness, while the cliché image oppositely prompts our brains to feel indifference and disregard.

When an artist (like bsweber) revitalizes or reinvents the ho-hum hour glass, he frees it from its assigned meaning and gives it a surprisingly new one. He rocks when it comes to concepts, not a bad illustrator either.

Cool, but it's really just an reinterpretation of a great Milton Glaser insight from his night class. My notes got it down as something like this; "The strength of an image is based on the revitalization of a cliché. The viewer's immunity towards the image vanishes when it is experienced in a new and different way. Interest is stimulated when there is a violation of an assumption. A violation that is convincing is communication at the highest level." Milton Glaser

Thanks. But that's my point - if 1 in a 1000 unicorn subs is still giving it an original spin, then unicorn subs shouldn't be scrapped altogether.

wow you guys are completely right I never even realized. Sometimes you just see so many that don't stand out that you get tired of looking at them when right before your eyes there is a killer design. All those designs above are really good. I'm definitely going to keep this all in mind next time I check out designs, score, etc. Thank you both.

Toast. If I never see another design with toast, I'll be happy.
