Im not sure if anyone else here has any particularly strong feelings on this matter, but they are mentioning it every other minute on the radio here, & its really getting my back up.
Im generally pretty hardline & unforgiving, but I honestly thought that releasing Megrahi was the right thing to do, & was an appropriate show of compassion given the current & past relations with Libya. Now Im hearing that there are groups in the US asking for a boycott of the UK because of the release.
It seems to me strange to be so outraged by the release of one terminally ill man, when there was hardly a murmur of discontent when the US lifted sanctions on Libya.
Plus, Id rather he were back home than using up my tax dollars here.

i dunno about this. normally i'd be for compassionate release, but he's convicted of killing hundreds of people. he was sentenced to life, and had he not had prostate cancer he would have stayed in jail, and possibly died in jail of old age.

it seems obvious that some some of trade agreement is behind the early release; and while it might be realpolitik it doesn't mean it's not despicable.

and the trade boycott is pretty stupid, but there you go

Its strange, James....I never agree with compassionate release, & am pro corporal & capital punishment in certain cases, but I really feel Scotland did the right thing. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that he is one man taking the fall for a whole country. I also think Libya deserves this bit of leniency....they have done a lot to improve their relations with the west.

robroy05 - I honestly have no idea what the situation should be if his situation improves? It made me mad when they put Ronnie Biggs in a nursing home.

And some dumb shits re-named French Fries to Freedom Fries for a while.

I never knew that.....it is the most wonderfully stupid thing Ive ever heard.

i agree with you about him taking the fall for a whole country, but it wasn't a nice country back then (money and weapons to the IRA), i still don't think it's an awfully nice place today.

it's all down to money in the end - after all blair and brown are completely beholden to it.

how've you been anyway? not seen you round for ages? what's with the job?

I’m sure his victims would have liked a little “compassion” and had a few more months to spend with their friends and family before they died. He deserves nothing. He is a mass murderer.

James, I think thats another thing that irks me....the US being all heavy handed on terrorists, whilst at the same time having supported the IRA & Israel & numerous other not so nice countries & organisations. I think Id be more sympathetic if it was another, not so politically & money motivated country.

Ive been super extra special busy at work, & extra busy with DIY at home & havent even had time to look on here for yonks! Hows things at your end.

good that you're busy. things are quiet here. trying to get some marketing stuff made. have enquired to some brick manufacturers if they can make us some miniature fletton bricks with our company name stamped on it to send out to architects and that

i don't know about the issues of the US because i haven't read about it.. but i know that gaddafi is a crazy man and he wants to throw a big party when this guy is released..

there were some problems between switzerland and Libya, because our police arrested Gaddafis son, after he mistreated his servants in Geneva and since then Gaddafi is threatening Switzerland and a guy working in Libya could not leave the country since then. I don't think this is a guy that only country can/should have serious relations with..

i think redundancies among architects are up something like 1600 per cent.

we keep getting these opportunites but they never quite come off. my business partner's soon to be step-brother is the director of tall buildings at foster and partners, but we just can't get to meet him - maybe at the wedding. and i was reading the paper yesterday and found out that the chief exec of foster+partners lives just round the corner.

I think they could have been a little more discreet about when the plane landed and not had that party erupt on the tarmac. You can send him back to Libya on compassionate grounds but I hope he's locked up there in a hospital where he can get treatment and see his relatives and be buried near home when he dies, but he shouldn't be out living it up.

trindli, I just had to read up about that, I dont remember it happening at all. youre right, hes pretty cuckoo, not the sort of stuff someone in charge of a country should be doing!

squatterjohn, I totally agree. I must confess Im not sure what the party was all about, whether Libyans were celebrating a terrorist, or whether they dont think he was guilty?

James, the only thing that has kept us going strong during all this is the fact we do a lot of work for councils. One of our clients who are doing very well is a utilities connection company, who predicted the downturn & started to target the public sector, hospitals & schools & stuff. Is there any way you could get work in that area?

there used to be quite a lot of PFI stuff for schools and hospitals, but a lot of that's dried up. we've actually had quite a few councils checking out our website, but none of them have contacted us as yet. met with this architects up in town the other day, and they'd like us to do a yacht they're working on. wouldn't be surprised if it falls through though.
