craigslist and the chicago reader are the best for finding apartments and jobs. if you are looking for apartments on the cheaper side - just remember they go fast. it can be competitive depending on the area.

my old roommate was a metalsmith and worked for a jewelery store that made custom designs. the downside was that it did not pay well.

maybe your girlfriend could try posting some of her stuff on etsy.com too. it's hard to sell there, but worth a try since it's only 20 cents to list an item.

your girlfriend could also check on craigslist to see if any of the stores around the city are looking for work to display in their stores on consignment. there are also some holiday art shows she could exhibit in, but last year the holiday shows were crap and i don't know anyone who did very well.

What are the "hidden gem" neighborhoods in Chicago?

I'm looking for a shared accom or studio or 1br for August 1st, but I need it on a 6 month lease... My girlfriend's brother is going to buy a place in Chicago but doesn't think that he'll be able to get one before Nov 1.

I'm moving to Chicago blind, so any help in this regard would be hugely appreciated!

wicker park is the hipster/artsy neighborhood

lincoln park and logan square are kind of upper scale places, but nice neighborhoods

lakeview is where the threadless stuff is (i think)

i think staying around the north side is your best bet

i could be really wrong in some of these neighborhood stereotypes, but that's what i've figured in my time visiting

i would def consider places in lincoln park, logan square, or lakeview!

let's not forget the park in my pants

roscoe village and ravenswood are nice too!

I haven't forgotten about your pants park, DaddyDom. But, seeing as we're arriving without furniture, we're looking for a place that's not so spacious....

On the Chicago-move front:
- my flight is on August 17th
- my apartment is in Lakeview (near Graceland cemetery)
- my excitement level is fluctuating between "OMG!" and "holy shitballs!"

hehe well i had a job that was going to place me in chicago but i think it fell through as the lady i was going to work with seems to have lost her mind.. dr.jekell & mr.hyde anyone? :P

but yeah you don't seem to come through the forums much these days. But obviously if you're still planning the move and packing and what not that that would take up most of your time. I've done huge moves before and they're not fun till they're over. heheh
