I'm trying to put together the "definitive" 4 CD Metal Mix and would welcome any band/song suggestions. Here's how it breaks down:

Disc 1 - WIZARD ROCK! early to late 70s
Metal's humble beginnings.

Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfly, King Crimson, Iron Maiden, Prism, Deep Purple, Triumph, Rush (maybe), Blue Öyster Cult...

Disc 2 - ARENA ROCK! late 70s - early 80s
The introduction of fast cars and loose women, and the tightening grip of the Dark Lord.

KISS, ACDC, Motörhead, Dio, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Helix, Megadeth, Metallica, Alice Cooper, Quiet Riot, Helloween, Slayer, W.A.S.P., Queensr’che, Manowar, Whitesnake, Scorpions, GWAR...

Disc 3 - GLAM METAL! mid to late 80s
The final whorahh when rock stars started looking like their groupies.

Guns N' Roses, Poison, Def Leppard, Cinderella, Skid Row, Warrent, Europe, Tesla, Mötley Crüe, Anthrax, Ratt, Faster Pussycat, L.A. Guns, Winger, Dokken, Twisted Sister, White Lion, The Cult, Faith No More...

Disc 4 - THE MAKE OUT ALBUM
A collection of Metal ballads that stretches across the length of the era. Think back to school dances and, well.. make out parties.

God I love the ballads!

What about the black/speed/death metals?

Oh, I would love the black/speed/and death albums!

You've gotta have at least a Zeppelin song or two. They were the founders of metal.
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Feb 26 '07 at 11:54am
I also wouldn't consider Yes to be metal.

Yes would go on a progressive rock mix, since they were one of the founders of that.

Where does Kiss fit in? Or are they metal? I know I liked them a long time ago... do metal heads even consider them metal?

Rock Deputy
Rock Deputy on Feb 26 '07 at 11:55am
that's a slippery slope.. in that, black/speed/death metal is still very much alive and kicking...

plus, there could be 4 discs alone in that catergory and we'd barely be out of Denmark...
mezo

Do not forget Dio, you butthead!
Rock Deputy
Rock Deputy on Feb 26 '07 at 11:58am
There'd definitely be one Zepplin song...

Perhaps Yes isn't a great choice..

KISS would be in Arena Rock...

the other thing - only one song per band can appear on the first three discs. Though, bands appearing on the first three can also appear on the Make Out Album.

dio has rocked for a long long time, but now its time for him to pass the torch...he has songs of wilderbeasts and angels, he has soared on the wings of a demon...but now its time for him to pass the torch...youre too old, no more rockin' for you! we're takin you to a home! but we'll sing a song about you!

I've decidely stopped at the end of the 80s... I think Metal kinda died off after that period and I honestly have no connection to Metal after 1989.

No way, Julie! Rush should be grouped with Yes on the progressive rock compendium along with Pink Floyd, ELP, ELO, and all my other loves.

Triumph!

"I'm On Fire For You Baby" by April Wine!

You should put some Cult on there. Perhaps "Love Removal Machine" or "She Sells Sanctuary"
juliejeremiah
juliejeremiah on Feb 26 '07 at 12:08pm
But aren't Rush recognized as one of the metal's founders? That's what I understood, it's a branch off the same tree.

However....I forgot Chilliwack!

I'm afraid that Marilyn Manson simply doesn't fit... and their first recordings were in 1990.. a year too late.
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Feb 26 '07 at 12:09pm
Maybe Rush's very first album could be considered metal, but I would never classify them as such. I mean, obviously progressive rock has metal in it, but there are a lot of distinctions.

Maybe some Blue Oyster Cult.

Actually, just go look at Metallica's "Garage, Inc." CD and choose some of the bands that they cover on there.

Cody, do you still live in Halifax or am I thinking of someone else? I'd just like to add this:

April Wine
Mar 02 - Halifax, NS - The Marquee

Not really "metal" but....they know how to rawk!
Rock Deputy
Rock Deputy on Feb 26 '07 at 12:27pm
oooooow... I do live in Halifax! And it would be kinda cool to see April Wine at the Marquee... even though I hate seeing once-big bands play small venues. It's really depressing.

I once saw Flock Of Seagulls headline an 80s Retro Event and (having reinvented themselves as a grunge band) they totally cleared the room. Seriously... the lobby was crowded with people leaving.
