A shirt that doesn't speak for itself fails its duty as a graphic tee... I shouldn't have to look at the title to figure out what it represents. The "basement" doesn't look basementish at all, and the fact that the bike is proportionally larger than the alamo makes it look like it's closer and in the foreground, rather than vertically below the alamo. I guarantee you no one will understand what this shirt means, and it's a pity that it is getting printed. Who picks this stuff, anyway?

I think it's a shitty shirt, but at least I get the reference.

Not to sound elitist or anything, but if you don't get the reference you're not entitled to opinion.

Yeah, I'm an asshole.

not everything has to be illustrated to perfection. the different elements in this shirt are more symbolic/iconic than realistic. to have things to scale would make this shirt a lot harder to read. but yeah, i'm guessing you don't get the reference. everyone i've showed this too has understood it without the title... because that bike is unmistakable.
sonmi
   sonmi on Oct 12 '06 at 6:33pm
the lack of realism makes even more sense in relation to its subject, since there is no basement in the alamo -- it was just an idea.

funny, it's the highest selling t-shirt this week.

Seems like people are getting it fine to me.

Actually, the text tee was the fast seller this week... I'm always amused when that happens.

tesco
   tesco on Oct 12 '06 at 7:14pm
def helps if you've seen the film. it's pretty exclusive like that. but yeah sonmi is right, I see lots of comments on subs about things being unrealistic in things like scale and lighting. I dont know where this notion that everything has to be an exercise in realism has come from.

"I think the haiku shirt was the highest selling."

I don't even count the text tees, they are cheaper and in a different competition of sorts than the design related ones.

They're cheaper?

Speaking as a text tee winner myself, I do kinda agree with bananaphone. I had friends who were all excited about my win, and I was just like... "Yeah... But it's only a text tee, dude. It's not like I did anything."

My designs will come one day.
Laborpsus
Laborpsus on Oct 12 '06 at 9:01pm
I blame all of you. Every single freaking one of you for not telling me about the $12 tag sooner. That's like a $9 shirt with a coupon.

...and now it's sold out. I hope you people are happy with yourselves. It's your fault I couldn't get the haiku shirt. It's your fault I'm not perceptive, and it's your fault my eyesight is horrible. It has nothing to do with my genes.

YOUR FAULT. ;)

Text Tees weren't even part of Threadless in the earlier days anyway.

They just decided to merge two sites together. Makes sense anyway, since both are t-shirt sites.
Larlar
Larlar on Oct 12 '06 at 9:05pm
They also seem to initially print less text tees than other new prints, so you can't really compare the two just by the arbitrary bar.

Also, this shirt is going to be one of my most worn shirts ever. I'll have sex in it first chance I get. So, like, 2010.

i didnt get teh referance, i think the design stands alone strongly, because it is illustrated with such a great unique style.

does it have something to do with pee wee?

that bike is awesome.

but yeah fuck the referance, its a great graphic and tahts all that ever matters to me when it comes to tee's

I'm very much a Pee Wee advocate, but this shirt definitely sucks. The design does a poor job of conveying the the concept, and REFERENCE IS NOT AN END IN ITSELF. Your assessment is accurate--the design would be great if it retained its aesthetic value as empty signifiers to those "out of the joke," but as it stands it's an unattractive design and a poorly-crafted reference.

There are a lot of really great cult films out there, but there are also one or two that frankly I've never understood some people's attraction to...

...a preposition is a word one must never end a sentence with...

Pee Wee's big adventure is one. Goonies is another.

But then if everyone liked them, they wouldn't be cult classics, right?
joshwa

Hey guys... great stuff here. I never intended The Basement to be polarizing, but that's pretty awesome, eh? As someone previously mentioned, the shirt is meant to be iconic. If drawn to scale, the bike would be about half an inch tall on the shirt. The reference was intended to be obscure, not bearing any resemblance to the style of art from Big Adventure itself.

And I'm not Tim Burton.

And dang it, folks... didn't you know? There's no basement in the Alamo.

Its not really that this design sucks, its the fact that there are dozens of better ones that never become tees. Its starting to drive me crazy!
SuperPope
SuperPope on Oct 16 '06 at 4:51pm
I understood this design immediately. I think you just missed the Pee-Wee boat, being only 21.58 years old. This shirt is more for 30-somethings.
Papaprime
   Papaprime on Oct 16 '06 at 5:00pm
hey now pope, I'm only 25 and a half, and I've seen that film repeatedly, especially the part where he's showing off on his bike and hits the curb. The comic timing provided by the editing is HILARIOUS! and you know I loved it, I typed the adjective out in caps!

I honestly view the subject matter as an artistic rendering, not a bad drawing. To each his own. And alot of eaches are buying the shirt.
