Well, the plywood is going up, the power is going down, and I'll be logging off now. Rita will be the reason for my absence of blog-lurking, and I'll miss y'all while I'm fleeing the storm that threatens my dear Texas coast. I'll fill you all in on the events once I regain computer access, but if I don't reach my intended destination it may be for weeks. Hopefully I can get out soon, but I may just be drinking bath-tub water in the future.
Anyway, stay safe my fellow Texans! And wish us luck Thread-heads!

*update*
Still stuck here, it's madness traffic out of Houston has been reduced to a 4mph crawl. This is rediculous. My dad wants to "stick it out", but hopefully once the roads have been transformed to one-way-only we'll get out in time.

Some good news - they're now saying it might weaken and drop to a category 3 before it hits the coast. In any case, stay safe :)

what part of houston do you live in?

-k.

ps - put water in tupperware and freeze it
you'll have ice, it will stay frozen longer than cubed ice and keep stuff colder, and if you need drinking water you can melt it.

A tip: If you are stuck somewhere with no drinking water, forgo bathing or attempting to clean yourself. Your bodie's natural oils will keep you more hydrated. Hahaha...

But seriously, good luck down there! Stay safe and keep your head down.

I live in Galveston. Rita looks like she's turning, but I still hate taking this risk of staying. They've opened incoming lanes to speed up traffic, we might make our move tonight, hopefully.

Hate to nag, but take a look at this if you really think that staying put is a good idea:

http://www.brendanloy.com/2005/09/scary-picture.html

"Storm surge heights will peak at 15 - 20 feet in some bays, and bring the ocean inland up to 50 miles from the coast. Large sections of I-10 between Houston and Beaumont could be inundated, and the flood waters may reach the cities of Beaumont, Orange, and Lake Charles."

I do NOT think staying is a good idea. Traffic is at a stand still and my dad refuses to leave current;y. I don't really have a choice. :\

sorry, that previous statement might have been a bit harsh. I wasn't trying to belittle your situation. I really have no clue as to how crazy it is on the coast there. I'm sure the mood in your household is quite tense. You do still have at least 36 hours before the hard stuff makes landfall, so hopefully your dad comes around soon. Good luck.

No, I didn't take it personally. I want to leave, the sad thing is that the traffic is so bad that we cannot make progress. Hopefully once it clears out (they turned incoming streets one way only out of the city) we'll leave tonight.

It is VERY spooky. I went driving trying to find any groceries and the roads were dark and everything is empty and concealed by boards and metal walls. I saw a few police men and maybe one or two cars.

Oh, and Kerrn, I don't live on the Seawall side, that's were the 90% are evacuated. All of the people living around me are gone, so it is really intimidating.
