So I have just posted a critique that was basically just an outline with a little bit of black coloring. I saved it as a JPG and unfortunately the file was 290 something kb. So I saved it as a GIF and only shaved off 10-20 more kb. After saving it as a PNG I got it to 243kb. But this is only an outline. How can I downsize the image file other than saving it as different file types? Is there some way to compress it or what?
Sorry if this is a noob question.. lol..

what program are you using?

in photoshop, you want to choose "save for web", which allows you to play around with various file and compression settings.

Photoshop CS4

Yeah, there's an option that says 'Save for web & devices', I'll play around with that and see what it does, thanks :)

I'm assuming it'll affect quality correct? Whatever, I'll just link a highres version then.

Save for web and devices is definitely your best bet. You can get away with compressing a JPG that way without pixelating it too much. Same goes for a gif, although you'll have to mess around a bit more.

Yeah lol, just figured that out.. I'm playing around with it and if I save my PNG as a JPEG it says it'll cut it down to 178kb or so. That's still a lot for an outline.. but it's my only shot really.. thanks Stalliongsta!

it might be an obvious question but is it 72dpi? i've rarely had a sub image over 250kb unless there was craploads of gradients in it.

O! I never thought of that! I think it's 200dpi.. I know that's what the highres document is, and to save it as a jpeg I just od a save as then JPEG and reduce the image size to 640x800 for submitting.. So maybe it kept the 200 dpi.. if so, how would one change the dpi lol? I know how to create documents and adjust the res, but idk how to change it after that..

You can also "flatten" your layers to compress space before you save your file.
ryinghill
ryinghill on Jul 31 '09 at 10:31am
under "layers" , then "flatten image"
Ars Fera
Ars Fera on Jul 31 '09 at 10:34am
As soon as I save it as a jpeg it does that for me, the layers aren't what's taking up the space :z
