I always prefer to give animals unlikely human names like Hugo, Igor or Victor.

It is a reference to Schrodinger's Cat, which is one of the most celebrated scientific paradoxes. See:

The paradox lies in the clever coupling of quantum and classical domains. Also, upon further review, I believe there is a cat in Checkerboard Nightmare named Schroedinger, in reference to the paradox. So, it's creatively taken.
