greatest two huh/twist movies i own are "butterfly effect" and "american beauty." i must love movies that make you think for days and weeks after the credits roll, cause these are two of my favorites of the last several years.

HA! I totally agree with the Mulholland Drive. Good thing lady Naomi Watts & her stunning beauty make up for the confusion.

Anyway, a movie that left me perplexed yet slighty annoyed was Elephant.

I didn't find Donnie Darko all too difficult to figure out. I never thought all that much about what happened though, and just took it for face value being that there's so many different possibilities for so many different details.

I was just about to rent Elephant... now I'm not so sure if it's worth it?

I had no trouble with Elephant. I just thought that it was really really really good. And I was in high school at the time, so it was kind of scary. It would be so easy for kids to do that. Yikes.

The one that was weird to me was Pi. But, it made better sense the second time through.

Watch Donnie Darko at least two more times. Do a little researc h online, too. That helps.

Actually, I found Elephant rather bad. The story is rather boring. The dialogue and acting is bad, but that can be excused since all of the actors are fromt he high school the movie was filmed in.

A lot of people will probably disagree with me, but I couldn't get through 5 mins of Run Lola Run before exclaiming "What the fu...Off!!". I watched Donnie Darko & afterwards felt like I'd just stared at a blank screen for 2 hours.

I like Elephant A LOT. The takes in it were so long. And the places where it over-lapped in time to show the other characters take on the events was amazing. They're almost flawless. Even when he walks out and the dog perfectly jump-spins in the air. And they filmed each angle singly with one camera. It's not like they did a take with multiple cameras pointing at the same place, because you would have seen them there.

The acting could have been better, but you're right. They DID just go to the school that they were filming at and hold auditions for the parts. But, taking that into consideration, it's not all that bad. You are right about it being slow at times. It's especially tedious when that kid's developing his film and whatnot. But, if you just sit down and watch it for what it is, I think that most people would either get scared, or like it.

If you can't tell, I thought it was really good.

The only movie that made me go like WTF is Andrei Tarkovsky's "Stalker"...

I've read the book that the fim is based on called "Roadside Picnic" by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky, my favourite sci-fi book, but the movie man you need damn drugs to servive it and understand it. :/

i don't understand, everyone in my family except me can't seem to make heads or tails of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotles Mind. I absouteley ADORE that movie, so it makes me mad when they keep asking me what's going on when some really important plot peice or visual effect is going on.

lynch's flicks are about transcendentalism. His cinematography and the music of Badalamenti, mixed with freaky characters is utterly incredible. I think people just get too lost with all the side characters. There is always one main character that under goes some type of transformation usually to come to an understanding or realization of past events.

mullholland drive is brilliant, especially the scene with the woman singing in the underground theatre. Her voice is captivating until she passes out and you realize she was lipsynching, which underscores another theme used by Lynch: everything is not what it seems. however, the token playboy lesbo scene ruins this movie for me, it's cliche and pure piss.

Donnie Darko, not much to get really, but a very enjoyable flick, I guess you could also sum it up by just say it's about transcendentalism too.

wanna watch a movie that will have you not knowing whether you're coming or going? watch Sans Soleil by Chris Marker http://imdb.com/title/tt0084628/ this flick is a trip, in a sense of the hippie term. you'll want to turn it off... but don't, force yourself to watch it, but there are some graphic scenes, everyone always comments about the giraffe ... it's just crazy.

kidaro on Aug 16 '05 at 10:35am
What Robsoul said, or Lynch is just fucking with us, which I think is a definite possibility. I liked Lost Highway but Mulholland Drive just made me feel manipulated by a bored film maker. No sir, I didn't like it. I'll probably watch it again though, 'cause I want to like it, and the girls are indeed pretty.

I just saw The Station Agent. It was a good movie that just sort of ended in a weird place. A lot of important things happen, and then nothing.

The only movie I didn't really get was Pistol Opera. I don't really understand the pacing and symbolism of Kabuki Theatre, which I percieved to be important in this movie.

I just watched "requiem for a dream" and it made me feel very uneasy. The last 15 minutes were just too...real or extreme or whatev.Sorry,I´m still messed up.
Nevertheless this movie was great. One of the best "drug addiction"-films (if I may call it like that) I´ve ever seen.

"Elepahnt" is great. One of my favourtie movies.Watch it.

Another movie which confused me was "clockwork orange".The end was kinda strange...

Mr. Domino: The Station Agent?? Yeah, now that was a very interesting movie about different people finding a way to get along with eachother. You're right though, the ending left ya just kinda hanging and hoping for something a little more significant. But that was the whole atmosphere of the movie anyway, wouldn't you say? I enjoyed it though.

littlem on Aug 16 '05 at 12:24pm
Yep, I agree about the endings. That's one reason I'm always afraid to watch the Stephen King stuff because, first of all, the acting is usually horrible and the interpretation usually gets mightily tweaked, but I must say, I enjoyed "Stand by Me" "The Dead Zone" and
"Shawshank Redemption"
Are you a fan of any of those?

That's not too hard to figure out. But, how much of the end are you talking about?
Robsoul
   Robsoul on Aug 16 '05 at 12:38pm
Shawshank, yes, and don't forget Misery, that was good, at least from what I can remember. Yep, I'm so tired how he has to rap everything up with aliens living in the basement, it's such a cop out.

Never saw Elephant, I'll have to check that out.

Seriously though, if you are a musician, a painter, a designer you have to see Sans Soleil. It's like Baraka but it has no flow, rhyme or reason, it just is, like our lives at times. But again, it's really hard to sit through but you have to, consider it the Electric koolaid Test.

I actually never made it through Moulin Rouge! I turned it off but my wife continued to watch it and she loved it, as well as everyone else I speak to that watched it, they dug it. I did like the The Pillow Book and Down with Love with Ewan McGregor though, movies I thought I wouldn't like.

The Machinist is excellent with Christian Bale (American Psycho, Equilibrium, Batman Begins) as an insomniac. He lost 63 pounds for the roll and looks absolutely disgusting like a skeleton.

Well, the last scene when he´s in the hospital and this guy (I think it was the mayor or another politician) is with him and both are smiling like they were best friends.
This scene left me a lil bit unsatisfied.

littlem: Shawshank is an absolute classic. For the most part I don't really like Stephen King, it's just not my thing. I did like Dead Zone, though I would not rank it anywhere near Shawshank. Green Mile was excellent as well. The Stand felt too over the top, and the whole "Deus ex Machina" ending was a little bleh to me.

I do like endings that are somewhat open, that let you inject a part of yourself into the movie. Sort of like that dialogue in the Negotiatior about the movie Shane. It's not resolved whether he really died or not at the end, so what each of us believe is a small insight into who we are. I had this discussion with my friend after we saw OldBoy.

See...I cannot count how many times I find a movie sub-par when others RANT & RAVE over it (see; Elephant, Lost In Translation, American Beauty).

Requiem For A Dream has the total opposite effect- I find it HILARIOUS (see: ass to ass) when others are quite disturbed.

Maybe. Just maybe. I am a movie retard.

Not sure if anybody mentioned this yet but...

Donnie Darko was ment to be seen in conjuction with the website- which includes more information about it. Or you could just watch the Director's Cut..but some people say that kinda' ruins it. I don't know, I haven't seen that version.

If you watch the movie, then look at the website, and then watch the movie again it makes almost complete sense.
MrDomino

OldBoy was a very good movie, but the trailer gives you expectations that are not representative of the real film. It is not an action move, and while it IS a revenge film it is NOT the revenge film you expect by any stretch of the imagination.

Some people may find it disturbing as well. If you know that walking in you will enjoy it much more.
