a question for the older members possibly...or anyone with a decent taste in music.
doesn't matter if they're making music now...but must at least have had one album out pre 1980....as lets face it....todays modern music is just shite and souless....or in my down to earth words...shite.

here's a few of me faves:

Judee Sill
Marvin Gaye
Stevie Wonder
Humble Pie
Small Faces
Led Zep
The Doors
Nick Drake
Velvet Underground
Joni Mitchell

I love The Velvet Underground too. The Beach Boys, The Zombies, The Kinks, David Bowie, Vashti Bunyan so many great bands/ artists. But I think you write of todays music as shit. There is plenty of good stuff around, you just have to dig for it. Certainly mainstream music is shit even most so called "alternative" music.

My current most hated thing is singers selling themselves by emulating some late, great legend. Why the fuck is it a good thing that Duffy is just like Dusty Sprinfield? Why not just get down to Woolworths & pick up a £1.99 Dusty 'Best Of'.

I just realised I didnt answer the question. If I had to name one pre 80's band who always amaze me, and are some what underrated amongst todays youth, it'd be Simon & Garfunkel. You just dont get songwriting like that any more.

yeah know what you mean Welsh....i can't stand Amy winehouse as its just trying to be one of the great female singers of the 60's and earlier.

she'll be dead soon anyways.

also the stranglers! what a top band!! black and white is an awasome album.

also i forgot to mention Killing Joke.

How could I forget Tom Waits. Though I prefer his eighties stuff. And Syd Barrett. Pink Floys were never as good without him. And the uncool side of me loves all those Burt Bacharach classics.

"Like emptiness and harmony I need someone to comfort me"

I will always love that line, and don't think I can recall a single song that has a more intelligent line in it. In fact if I was asked what was my favourite song for lyrics alone, I'd probably say Homeward Bound.

my fave pre-1980's album is either the VU banananananana album or Selda's self titled alb.

but modern music is amazing and so much more diverse than old stuff. you need to look further than the Tesco charts to find the good stuff (although the amazing new cd is #1 in the supermarkets)

So much good stuff listed already. Here's some more late 70s stuff that I love:

Television, pre-80s Joe Jackson, Pretenders, and The Police, The Tubes, The Jam, and I will freely admit to loving Billy Joel's "The Stranger".

Agree that there's good music nowadays too though - to write it all off in one fell swoop is pretty unfair.

as lets face it....todays modern music is just shite and souless....or in my down to earth words...shite.

I know you're doing the grumpy old man thing, which is always fun, but that's complete nonsense. There's LOADS of great music these days, and it's easier to access a wider, more diverse range of great music than it has ever been in human history. Quitchercomplaining!

Been catching up on some of the ol' Leonard Cohen, which I always dismissed because my parents forced me to listen to it on long car journeys, but which is actually pretty great.

I mean, if Rufus Wainwright, Nick Cave and Antony Hegarty are fans, then he can't be all bad!

Some great solo artists f th 60's early 70's. Most of these are from the short lived blues/salsa fusion movement, dominated by the fourth tonal degree of the diatonic scale.

Really not impressed by Glasvegas, either. Apart from the hideous name, I'm just not a fan of that kind of Snow Patrol, Coldplay, Travis, U2-style big sound rock. Makes me fall asleep.

And the fact that they're being hyped all over the shop just sharpens my dislike for them!
