Maybe there was some celestial thing happening from 1955 to 1957 that looks like white and red lights whizzing up in the sky. It's just a wild guess, though.

This doesn't seem to be an album they put out - unlike the numerous albums they did put out.

When I was studying piano in high school I once asked a pianist for advice and he asked who my influences were. I mentioned Sun Ra and he got really upset and told me to avoid Sun Ra at all costs. He told me this odd story about how whenever Sun Ra toured that Sun Ra would assign rooms in their hotel based on "planetary allignment" but somehow he always got the best room.

Just finished reading a large bio of him. Musical Genius. He would play the most out there "space music" and then have the whole band play a danceable swing song on the very next number, all the while putting his own subtle variations on the composition. . .

how does an established band/group get their stuff on threadless? I always thought they were sort of anti-promo.

Anyway, I had to watch "Space is the Place" in my senior lit seminar and Sun Ra seemed like a load of hooey. It was painful listening to his music...

Oh you young kids! Sun Ra was a musical genius. I grant you that his later fusion experiments can often be tiring, his 60s work is very listenable and very fun.

The other thing is that Sun Ra's music was so much better experienced live. a true pioneer.

quality t-shirt but I hate jazz. suppose I could buy it and know that anyone who comments on it must be a jazz fan and avoid/stone them in the future

If anyone's still reading this thread and interested in Sun Ra happenings, check out the Hyde Park Art Center's exhibitions on Sun Ra, El Saturn, and Chicago's Afro-Futurist Underground (1954-68), on view til Jan 14. Two exhibtions, one of work unearthed from Sun Ra's manager's house from the 50's and 60's, one of contemporary artists responding to Sun Ra & his influence. http://www.hydeparkart.org.

Full disclosure: yes, I work at the Art Center, but I also heart Threadless!
