Hey guys! I'm brand new to threadless, and I was hoping to get some designs printed so that I can make some money to help pay for college. Does anyone have any tips about the best way to use this website? Any suggestions for a hard working student? Let me know!

Tip #1: If you don't have comments about a design, don't select a design from the drop-down menu when you are posting a blog. =]

if you have time, have a look at all the past printed designs to see what kind of thing this website is looking for

It's a pretty close community, which is cool in a lot of ways. You can get a lot of support from the blog forum, which really helps (for example) with getting slogans printed. (The flip side of the coin is that there's sort of a groupthink going on, which isn't always the best or easiest thing to deal with.)

If you submit something to the critique section, and are willing to rework it as suggestions come in, you can take a pretty bland idea and turn it into something really neat, using the harnessed creativity of a lot of people.

submit to critiques before you submit to the contest to get feedback on your designs and to make them as best as you can before they go up for voting

don't count on this to pay for college. Only a lucky few win. And only a talented handful win repeatedly. I think of this site as more of a hobby and a way to help me learn new tricks.

I'm afraid I don't have much in the way of ta-tas, but uh, thanks for the suggestion! And thanks to everyone else who has taken the time to post on my blog. Keep the helpful tips coming!

Have really really really awesome designs. That seems to be the most effective way.

But yes, definitely look at what's already been printed, and make use of the critique section, and definitely don't rely on this to pay for college unless you have unbelievable talent and/or you go to an incredibly cheap college.

Don't be here just for the money.

Its nice as an incentive to get you started, but you'll soon understand that if it's the only thing that motivates you - something's wrong.

Don't worry you guys! I'm not banking on this to get me through college. I really just want to get some of my ideas out there. The money would be helpful is all.

Do you guys do most of your designs by hand or on the computer?

i've done all kinds of methods. I usually draw out what i'm going to do and scan it. I've tried inking the linework and filling in the colors, and i've also turned the drawing into vectors.

How to use this website: pull the left lever and then turn the wheel 7 and a quarter clicks clockwise.

what againstbound says. sometimes it's a real crapshoot if you'll win even if you're real talented. some people just have a popular style too. no telling really.

oh and i think what motivates many people (at least me) is the sense of pride that comes with doing something well, and the awesomeness of seeing your stuff out there, on something a complete stranger is gonna wear :) there really is nothing like seeing your work in print. i don't do this full time though, i rely a lot more on freelance work and making the connections with people. you have more chance of seeing your work in print that way.
