Why don't more women design t-shirts here? I was browsing through the tees today and noticed that few shirts were worn by females which I assumed meant that they were not designed by females either. Sadness.

Sorry, I meant that few of the advertising pictures made by the designers were female; I wasn't referring to the thumbnails that buyers send in. Oops.

The product shots are of Threadless staff, not the designers. That being said, I wonder what the sex ratio is of the designers. Anyone bored, and want to figure it out?

I don't know about submissions. But I was, in fact bored. On the catalog page, I estimate a ratio of 15 boy-designed shirts to each girl-designed shirt, of the ones that were printed.

This is an estimate, due to some people not giving real names.

I'm a girl! Hehe.

That's kind of a crappy ration. We need to do something about this.....

Theres more men, or boys actually, here than girls. When people do submit a shirt "for girls" its often horrible. I intend to amend that. There are also not many official Threadless female models. I've seen one (in the shirts that aren't retired.) And if I remember correctly, the female is never standing by herself unless its the "2" photo. HEY WHATS GOING ON HERE..!

I'm a pessimist, so I don't think they're ever going to choose a shirt that's "for girls." I think us girls need to start thinking a little more what might appeal to guys, as far as design. Even though a lot of designs get high scores, the staff is who picks the ones to print. I want to see a female on that "interview with a designer" page. C'mon, let's get the game on.

The thing is, some of us can't design something boyish, hard as we try.. it just keeps coming out cute.

Such is the way of the girl designer. Sigh.

Well if you think about it, it doesnt make economic sense to design tee's just for guys or girls, by doing this your cutting out half your target audience which means a considerable loss of profit when they could of choosen a tee that appealed to both.

As for tee's with the women having to have a shot with a bloke, the tee's in question justify it by the content, for example the two ones based around marriage and the one where its a girl and a robot, since threadless doesnt have a robot a guy would have to surfice.

i agree, designs should have a wide appeal, rather than a specific gender target. that said, i do think girls could be better represented... but that's on us ladies to submit awesome stuff.

come on, just because you're a girl designer doesn't mean you automatically default to cute. girls have just as much chance at winning as the boys do. you just have to design for the target audience. at threadless the target audience is twentysomething males (i read that in a mag interview w/the jakes... it was more specific like males ages 18-30 or something but i couldn't relocate the online interview). this makes sense -- the threadless crew itself is mostly made up of twentysomething males. the fact that the goatse shirt even exists should tell you that much. anyway, the boys are where the business is for threadless.
