Threadless

okay...so Aled is the highest paid artist..right?

and he has had about 26 designs printed...right?

and has made about $56,200

but when you consider he has submitted more than 80 designs his average is about $700.00 per design. not bad, not great but not bad.

Then there is the rest....artists workin' your tails off for pennies.

Threadless, I have to hand it to ya. You know how to work a crowd. Just not this girl.

I don't understand. Are you thinking that Threadless owns submitted designs?
RuffinIt
RuffinIt on Apr 23 '10 at 3:11pm
no, I know they don't but why else create the art?
RuffinIt

It takes a long time to make these designs and it hardly seems worth the effort.

So, if you make an awesome design, which improves your skills as an artist, but it doesn't get printed, it doesn't get you any money, that design is worthless?

You don't enjoy making art? If not for Threadless, I would still be doing this and actually I DID do this before I knew about Threadless just making little designs for my portfolio. I think it's fun. I enjoy the process of getting better and better and trying different things.

They are doing it hoping to get printed so they can get paid.

sorry but i disagree. of course i want to get printed but i make art regardless. i have submitted a ton of designs and i would continue to do it whether i ever got printed again or not. people do illustrate and create just for the self enjoyment of it all.
tracerbullet

several designers who don't get printed here get their designs printed on other sites. it's not like they're always going to waste.

and most people do this as a hobby. if you try to make threadless your job, you're gonna be poor as fuck.
jstumpenhorst
   jstumpenhorst on Apr 23 '10 at 3:45pm
threadless is a good venue for exposure. even if you don't get printed on a tee it's still worth submitting in my opinion to help you develop as a designer or illustrator even if at the end of the day your primary canvas is not a tshirt.

False.

They are doing it because that's what they love doing. Otherwise they would've stopped a long time ago. Threadless isn't a job.

Also, Alex has sold his shirt designs to other places like shirt.woot, so even if Threadless didn't buy it, he still made money.

If you want to compare this to other professions look at the number of programmers who participate in open source projects which don't net them any money. So why do they do this? To be fools and give away their ideas? Of course not, real reasons include: to increase their skills, to network with others, to be able to look at something and say "I made that". Now guess what, same thing happens here.

i think if anything, threadless is a good motivator to create. i think there are some people who do only submit to threadless for the money, but i think the people who sub lots of designs just like to create, and a monetary reward is just the icing to what they do.
MeredithSerena
MeredithSerena on Apr 23 '10 at 4:06pm
I even do contests that offer no reward like on deviant art. hehe! Just cuz I like the theme.
sonmi
   sonmi on Apr 23 '10 at 4:06pm
threadless has helped me in so many non-monetary ways, too. it's forced me to focus on concepts and color palettes and learning about catering to a market.

haha, you really can't handle opinions that differ from yours or offer any respect for others or their arguments in debates.

telling people they're naive for enjoying making art? for getting some pleasure out of their art getting exposure? even without the obvious that that does further a career by getting your work into the world and making connections and all that, it's fucking disrespectful to dismiss someone's motivations for creating things.

it seems kinda pathetic to have no appreciation for the art of art itself, that everything is about money and why else should anyone bother to do anything.

i guess if ruffinit feels it's all about the money, that's her deal. i don't think any artist really needs to justify their means for creating their art.
