While practicing drawing people, I reminded my 3 year old students to include all the parts of a person they could think of. One little boy, nearing completion, was sitting in his seat thinking intently. I looked at his work so far and said, "you know, I can't think of ANYTHING else your person needs. You've remembered to include a body, fingers and toes, eyebrows, and you even put your teeth in your mouth. I must say, that is a really complete drawing." But he was not satisfied.

He stared a few moment longer before declaring, "I KNOW! A PENIS!!" and looked up at my triumphantly.

"I doubt you need to draw your penis," I told him, "since your pants would be covering it up anyway."

He looked at me for a moment before saying, "I'll tell you what. I'll draw the penis first AND THEN I'll put the pants on top." And that is precisely what he did.

a penis

Good thinking! Now his work can be preserved for posterity. :D

Are these going to be returned to parents or tacked onto the classroom walls? haha

tacked on the "God Made Me Special" bulletin board at the moment. It'll make it's way back to the parents/kid in the year end scrap book I make for each student. (captioned, of course)

Either that kid has poor scale skills or he's hung like a thoroughbred

His parents are going to be so proud of him. :D

PS. you just need to score 6 more subs to make your total 9999. (:

ooh you're right!! It's only taken me ~7 years of scoring to get there! :)

His mom and I had a good laugh about the story already, today!

Damn, 7 years? You should laminate the moment you hit 9999 subs and treasure it forever. (:

awesome!

i was once teaching some 8yr olds an art lesson. the next thing, this kid mumbles to himself "thank you for the bountiful penis".

i was like, "WHATTT??"

turns out he watched the simpsons movie the night before, and that was one of the lines. i nearly died laughing.

as long as there is no name and I'm not doing it for personal gain, I think I'm in the clear. If I were publishing a book of student stories, and wanted to include the work, I think it would be a different story.

I love looking at little kids pictures and reading about how they may indicate how our perceptions of each other develop.

Did you have to ask them to draw every single body part because so many kids that age just draw a face with arms and legs sticking out?

Yeah, SJ, I did a whole lesson beforehand where I start by saying I'm going to draw a person and I just draw a circle and say, "there. I'm done" and they all yell out, "Nooooo you forgot your _______" and I keep adding their suggestions to my picture until the whole class agrees it's complete. Then they get their own paper and the exemplar is visible while they work, and their people get pretty detailed, instead of 2 legs coming directly from the head.

That's so cool. I had to work all that out for myself.

I remember one time I painted a picture of myself from the front, and then from behind and I just painted a yellow line on the top of my head for the hair, which was fine for the front version, but for the back version, the back of my head was just bald. I knew something was wrong with it but I just couldn't work out what. That painting also featured a blue line across the top of the page for the sky.

^ I wanted to be a librarian once, but my siblings said no. (obviously I didn't want it that bad... I compensate by introducing 3rd graders to excellent books)
