I have been searching and searching to see if there is a way to change the color of a layer in the layer's palette in photoshop. I know I can select the layer and manually change the color by painting over what I previously had, but is there a faster way to do this? I have a design that has 5 shades of one color in it and I want to create an alternate of the design that has 5 shades of a different color. The shades are each on their own layer. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks

right click and click on layer properties then choose your color

Hue/Saturation and move the 'Hue' slider. You could do this for each layer. Alternatively you could create an adjustment layer (click the half black/half white circle at the bottom of the layers palette, and then pick Hue/Saturation) and put it up the top so it applies to all the layers.

Oops, sorry... I inadvertantly put in some html tags. My post said:

I lock transparent pixels and fill the whole layer with the new color.

Fill

4. A "Fill" window comes up. I wanted solid colors, so I left everything like it was (Normal blending and 100% opacity) and I wanted to preserve the transparent areas, so I checked the box for "Preserve Transparancy".

5. Check OK

This works great if you have a design that you have colored and have all the colors on separate layers, but you want to create an alternative choice of colors for your design.

Hope this helps others who are self-taught in Photoshop like moi. :)

oops!!!!!!!!! My response above was not very long, but it was cut off. Basically, I was trying to tell about the easy way I found to fill layers with new colors (for those who do not know). I'll try to enter the info some other way. Sorry bout that. :(

This is my solution for being able to change the (solid) color on a layer with ease:

Under the adjustment layers tab on the layers panel, choose "Solid Color"

Create a mask for that layer, and fill it all black. Then paint white to reveal the color.

This way, you can simply double-click on the solid layer at any time and change the color.
