Super Mario Question

ok so I've got this idea and it involves Mario - I know, I know it's a bit overdone but I wanna give it a go.
Anyways I used to play Super Mario Bros on the Nintendo but I'm not a gamer and don't know all the in's and outs of most computer games so my question is - what is the symbol, or is there a symbol that appears on the screen while your playing Super Mario that shows how many lives you have left? Is it a heart?
And if not would you say the heart is kind of a universal symbol that represents computer game lives or not?

You gamers are probably thinking this is a stupid question but I need some help!

Is it even on the screen during gameplay? It has a little image of Mario with a "x 3" etc (for 3 lives "x 4" for 4 etc) next to it on the title screen when you begin the level and shows you what world/level you're on. If it is there in gameplay it's probably a Mario pic. I forget.

But hearts are pretty standard. They use them on the Videogames ruined my life typetee.

yeah I did a search for screen images and saw the x3 thing but wasn't sure what that meant - I haven't played Mario for so long.
And yeah the only symbol I could recall was the heart from the type tee.

Mama mia! It was a tiny Mario dat had x01 then when you get a da green mushroom it turns into x02! Mama mia! You shoulda include me ina da design!

I'd say hearts are more representative of health, not lives. Lives should be little fetus icons.

Yeah, another cool feature of the endless goodness of Super Mario is that there was no health meter....you were either small or big. And if you weren't either of those things, that meant you were dead and probably jumped into an endless pit :)

But for Mario, 1UP mushrooms were a way to show instant game gratification.

FA - that kinda sux for the idea I had - not sure if i'll do it now knowing there isn't really a symbol for lives - but do you always start with 3 lives?
