Sometimes I think music has more of an effect on me than smells when it comes to digging up old memories.

I know I'm going to be judged for the pathetic music that elicits an emotional response from me...but don't think I don't have an eclectic taste in music. It just so happens that at the moment these are the ones that affect me. :D yay...

I guess I could turn these into links to youtube videos, but chances are no one would click them anyway.

Songs that make me...not necessarily sad, but make me relive sadness.

Carolina Liar - Show Me What I'm Looking For
Ben Harper - Walk Away
Keith Urban (I know, I'm embarrassed...) - Stupid Boy
Reckless Kelly - Wicked Twisted Road
Nickel Creek - When You Come Back Down
Sister Hazel - Your Winter
Shawn Mullins - Lullaby (acoustic)
Hootie and the Blowfish - Let Her Cry (acoustic)
Fleetwood Mac - Dreams
Relient K - At least we made it this far
Rogue Wave - Eyes

Songs that never fail to make me happy on some level

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Underwater (You and Me)
Bluejuice - vitriol
Lady Gaga - I like it rough
Dr. Dog - Heart it Races
Tom Petty - Listen to her heart
Steppenwolf - Magic Carpet Ride
Phish - You Enjoy Myself
Katy Perry - Hot & Cold
Katy Perry - If you can afford me

Songs/artists that inevitably make me relive phases or moments in life:

Weezer - The Sweater song
Journey - Don't Stop Believin'
Stereophonics
T.I.
Anything Neil Young
Anything Led Zeppelin (especially Bron Y Aur and Black Mountainside)
Journey - Too Much Time on my Hands
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
OAR - Love and Memories
Ben Harper's cover of In Your eyes
Counting Crows - Long December
Bob Dylan - Hurricane
Steve Miller Band - The Joker
Doobie Brothers - Long Train Runnin'
Gorillaz
Jack Johnson
Shooter Jennings - 4th of July
Sia - Breathe Me
Jet - Look what you've done

HAH

It reminds me of my last year in school (last spring). I was stressed all the time because of classes and worrying about failing out of college, and rap helped me stay upbeat instead of listening to like...ben harper and freaking out I was singing about how I can have "whatever I like..."

Oh hey, I was thinking of making a blog like this.

Every time I listen to "Anyone Else But You" by The Moldy Peaches, I think of boysbeamPriscilla. It just kind of happens. And I have no problem with it.

kashlen on Feb 25 '10 at 12:17am
Every time I listen to Dr. Dog - Heart It Races I think of omair

maybe that's why it's on my happy list

Thanks Becca! I like your off topic comment

I agree!

Also, Alphaville's "Forever Young" will always remind me of my grandfather's funeral and thus, always get me sad.

And Phoenix's "Napoleon Says" (and pretty much that whole album) always makes me really happy no matter what simply because it takes me back to my senior year of H.S.

There's more, I just can't think of anything else right now.

"Between the Bars" by Elliott Smith will always and forever be associated with the summer of 2008.

While Regina Spektor's "Hero" will always be associated with this past summer, and listening to it will always give me the feeling of someone punching me in the stomach.

Also, that Regina Spektor song will always make me think of that one scene from 500 Days of Summer. Which also connects to last summer.

It all adds up to me feeling completely and utterly gutted.

I need to listen to some of these suggestions. I recently heard some of Phoenix's and Elliot Smith's stuff... I like.

Thanks Khol!

PEAR!! :D Yep! I have a jerk friend on facebook that wrote on my wall all like, "kerry, I didn't know you had a baby!!" (huhyuck huhyuck...aka goofy laugh to show how not amused i am..)

Alwin, I hate feeling gutted. Songs that shouldn't make me sad sometimes make me sad.

Oh man, I loooooooove Sia's Breathe Me. Amazing song.
kashlen
kashlen on Feb 25 '10 at 1:07am
Yeah, i love it aubz. Although I found it disturbing because I randomly go through weird phases where I look up disturbing videos or facts on the internet for awhile then I get over it and look at happy things again. But once, with a friend, we were surfin the ole youtubealube and found these thinspiration videos and like every other video had sia's song on it

I have far too many. The best example I can think of right now is that one time I put "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" by Stars on repeat the night over this past summer when my then-boyfriend broke up with me. I think I ended up listening to it over 200 times in a row while I took a couple shots of whiskey and sat alone on the back porch.

That sounds incredibly depressing, but it was one of the more comforting songs at the time.

Feist's "Inside and Out" and St. Vincent's "Marry Me", both take me back to the days of being hopelessly in love.

...which isn't a bad thing.

Anyways, Sufjan Steve's "Vito's Ordination Song" always reminds me of the day my niece was born.
kashlen
kashlen on Feb 25 '10 at 1:34am
Anna, yeah I have songs like that...though this one was farther along in the process. I used to listen to it on my commute to school in the mornings.

There's a song called "Johnny and June" that reminds me of happy times but I can't listen to it

Hootie and the Blowfish gets me too...my parents used to play tapes of them when we drove around. My memories of early childhood are mostly of driving around northern BC, just sitting in the back with my brother sleeping next to me and listening to the music and staring out at the landscape. We'd listen to Hootie, and Bourne & Mcleod, Gordon Lightfoot.

The music from then isn't necessarily stuff I listen to now, but I could never really dislike it because it's so connected to that time and that place in my mind.

bill bourne:

and I totally agree with Fleetwood Mac's Dreams, it kind of makes me want to dance with somebody but it kind of makes me want to cry
kashlen
kashlen on Feb 25 '10 at 1:37am
hah, don't worry, I understood what you were saying..

also, best i've ever had by vertical horizon used to be really depressing when I still thought that...then my brain started working
kashlen
kashlen on Feb 25 '10 at 1:38am
I love that picture and I could totally see all those artists going with staring at pretty landscape.

it kind of makes me want to dance with somebody but it kind of makes me want to cry

I couldn't agree more.

that bill bourne song just sounds cozy...like you're drinking hot chocolate with family by a fire or something
Polyester Jones
Polyester Jones on Feb 25 '10 at 1:47am
haha...it's funny that you think it sounds cozy...to me it sounds completely different, like lonely I guess? It's a really sparse landscape, and song. My parents would talk in really low voices to each other in the front so I couldn't hear, or not talk at all, and my brother would just lean against me and fall asleep and I'd feel like I was the only person awake in the whole world.

Canada's so spread out, especially up there, that we'd drive for hours to visit people my parents knew or go to the next town over. And my dad's big on "day trips", so we'd drive for eight hours a day on the weekend to go look at a lake and then turn around and go home.

I'm reading your list more closely now. What is it about Lady Gaga that makes people so happy?! I don't listen to her very often but whenever I do I come up smiling.
kashlen
kashlen on Feb 25 '10 at 1:49am
Yeah, that's why I think some of my choices are weird because there are songs that make me happy or sad that to others would have an opposite effect.

I don't know! I would never think i'd like lady gaga but I have one of her albums....

I love the acoustic versions of Poker Face.

she just looks and sounds like she's having so much fun, all the time. I guess it's infectious.

I always avoided her and then I saw a video of her live and there was fake blood and crazy costumes and screaming and I realized it was totally my thing.

and this always reminds me of elementary school

Hahahaha Vanilla Ice! So elementary school. My cousins and I used to sneak the cassettes of both him and Sir Mix-A-Lot into the cab of my uncle's truck so we could listen to them without getting into trouble from my super strict aunt.
