Aaron, why should type tees be removed? Especially when Threadless is revamping the scoring system for them and "legitimizing" the art of the slogan more now? No one has given a explanation why this is an opinon of some designers here.

Why is winning the slogan contest any less of an accomplishment than winning the design contest? And I'm not talking of monetary differences, of which I honestly think slogans should get half of what designs get for winning, not a forth. And that's not because I need more money, just as a respect thing to the craft, as well as so many sloganeers here that have been pumping out brilliance for years and if it's financially feasable for Threadless I'd love to see them make a little more off what they contribute here...

btw, this isn't being said in an angry tone, it's of general conversation and interest on this topic. I wanted to start this up a couple weeks ago, but I didn't because I just didn't feel like dealing with the drama of being mis-interpreted or not just having a level-headed convo about this :)

A type tee is in no way on the same level as a design (unless of course you do the full written part and illustration)

Winning the slogan competition does not require a fraction of the effort it takes to create a winning designs on threadless (there are questionable exceptions), many artists have been practising since they were children drawing all the time to hone their skills, I would be very impressed if you had been writing funny/witty slogans since you were 7 years old, which leads onto your view on the cash, I would be insulted to see sloganeers get MORE than they do already I really dont think you spend 20 hours and up on a single slogan hell I would like to see you push a solid hour of continuous thought on just one slogan, you would of gone insane years ago. In short what you have now is a blessing and you should be grateful that threadless lets you write them at all when they have more than enough clever staff members to not only create the slogans but illustrate them themselves.

A type tee is in no way on the same level as a design (unless of course you do the full written part and illustration)

I'm not talking about a type tee, I'm talking about a slogan. And we obviously disagree, and many people do here as well, of the value of a slogan versus a design. I don't agree, a brilliant slogan to me is on the same level of a design.

As for your thoughts on sloganry, to come up with a good slogan many people on this site think long and hard and yes, for hours, on different slogans, trying to craft a something that contains an entire world, an entire story, in 65 characters or less. Just because the mass amount of slogan offerings are sub-par and lazy (which is actually the same for many designs up for scoring), the people who take slogans/design seriously put all of their heart and brains into making something that could possibly be tee-bound.

And yes, I've been writing along with many people here, since we were kids, and I've been trying to endlessly hone my slogan craft just like any other artist on this site. Some times it takes so many tries to really nail down the concept or joke/thought you are going for, looking at the same slogan over and over before you get it as good as it can be.

And since when did the amount of time on a slogan/design equal how much its value is? I don't think a design that takes fifteen minutes or one that takes fifty hours matters as much as how effective the design is...most designers have said the same thing in several discussion Ive seen involving complex or simple design.

As for being happy with what sloganeers get and that they are treated this well form Threadless, that seems to be a very elitist look at what slogans are and what it takes to write them. And I don't really need you to tell me what i should and should not think is a "blessing", slogans/type tees were not invented by Threadless and are not their sole property, although Threadless was my main encouragement and started me on the path that I want to do for my entire life now with slogans and collabs, and for that I am eternally grateful.

I know slogans will not get the respect I think they deserve from many members of this community, but for this side of the Threadless world where there are some of the funniest people and comedic lines I've ever read (I rank Larlar and BioSam and many others with the best of my favorite stand-up comedians), I think it's something worth speaking out for.

We are not talking about beutifully crafted poetry or literature that has shaped history we are talking about funny stuff you can say down the pub or write up on twitter, you are deluding your self with the value you place on stringing together a funny setence, hell proffessional comdiens can basically give an entire performance constructed from funny short one lines jokes and gags with out taking a breath, if these peopl were as great as you say they wouldnt need to submit these slogans at all and would be up on stage.
Whats more is that your words on tees will not sell half as well if Illustrator/designer doesnt do the heavy lifting with the type treatment otherwise all the slogan designs would be black comic sans on a white tee.

FRICKINAWESOME
   FRICKINAWESOME on Feb 07 '11 at 9:39pm
haha, I'm not deluding myself dude, I know what I write (or any t-shirt for that matter, slogan or illustration) isn't going to change the world, EVERYTHING we are all doing here falls under that same category (although we can could write slogan tees for charities and raise awareness, that would be pretty cool).

And i don't think it's crazy to consider slogans an artform just like designs are, yes, the dedicated sloganeers here ARE trying to make funny statements, while others do more serious slogans and even others do slogans that mess with the t-shirt and really think outside the box to what a slogan tee is capable of.

You demean comedians and the material they produce over illustration, some comedians have shaped the way i think about the world and have offered some of the most sincere critiques of society and etc, and aren't just all one-liners, and looking at many people's slogan work here, it is MUCH more than the sum of their 65 character parts.

This arguement is in NO way trying to demean designs that are purely illustration, I love them and think they are incredible and something I could never do, I just don't understand how illustration is put on such a higher level here by some when comparing slogans and etc. This isn't an arguement to me of who is better than what, it's that all of it when done well is on the same level of being something of value when put on a shirt.

And I'm also NOT debating illustration isn't important to a type tee, I'm talking about the SLOGAN, which wins the contest before the illustration of the typography is completed. And i actually find the type tees that appeal most to me are of a simple font with not too much illustration making the slogan much harder to follow and understand, of course there are many exceptions and I alsways enjoy seeing what a talented Threadless artist can do with a slogan, and usually improves it.

Also, the monetary issue isn't really important to me, it's a tiny aside I put up there and not the reason I do what i do here as well as many other wordy folks here. It's almost all about the love :)
