i know there have been mixed emotions regarding the Loves Threadless competitions... and i was just wondering what others found were the pros and cons of them.

personally, i like threadless's regular competition, because designs are allowed to be art, and be personal. (or at least more so then they would be at say, hot topic's design studio.) but when designing for the "real world", i don't like having to consider their needs and expectations above my own artistic ideals. i guess that's why i'm taking painting and not commercial illustration.

what do you guys think? what do you like/dislike about Loves Threadless?

like: gives you a target to work towards. is good practice and a nice change from the random.

dislike: sometimes too narrow a guideline. don't want to see 5 million designs that are all the same.

I'm actually more interested in the Loves Threadless competitions. I like it when a lot of people are given the same problem to solve and seeing how they come up with different approaches to the same thing. It's easy to be creative with no limitations, the challenges that improve you (at least as far as I have noticed) are the ones that force you to be inventive. I also learn a lot more from the experience.

mmm true!! ya, i guess you do see a lot of really creative people come out of the woodwork in the loves comps.
no, they're not all bad, that's for sure. i have my little issues here and there, but for the most part, i figure that loves is a-ok.

You know what happens...is...with the loves threadless...ESPECIALLY the ifc ones.......they just runt he competition too long...ive seen this "guns and weapons ont he wall" idea maybe 5 times...ugh...people ...they just all kinda look the same. Now mind you , im not hating..but im usually not a rude person but...as soon as i see an ifc i give it a zero. Im just so sick of seeing it. Anyways my point is the comps run too long...thats it.

the Loves Threadless stuff are a challenge. It shows your skills and how flexible and design oriented your work is. Its much more valuable than fine arts personal pieces to me. I think painters and fine arts illustrators should give the public a shot and focus on the public they live in, rather than themselves, its not so healthy to be focused on yourself...you'll end up o.d'ing on shroom+wine cocktails and have to be buried in a plywood coffin :Z

I think the Loves Threadless comps are a good thing - good for the designer, good for the sponsor, and good for Threadless. However, I get tired of seeing the submissions mixed in with the ongoing comp., therefore, I think the Loves Threadless comp submissions should be in a separate place for judging. ... like, if you want to score the Loves Threadless IFC submissions, there should be an icon that you hit to go to those submissions ONLY. That way, those who WANT to see hundreds of IFC submissions can do so, and those who only want to score the ongoing submissions can do that. Everyone is happy.
