Now showing the OSC Top 100!

Slogans are one of the truly fun parts of threadless, even though it lacks some functionality. One big baddy is the absence of a comment function but sloganeers have found ways around that by building up communities. If you love slogans and you have a feeling that your precious words are not really appreciated by the slobbering masses then hop on over to a brighter place: Official Slogan Club.

Of course word loving natures may also like numbers, so I have set up a simple Slogan Statistics page which can cough up a quick sum up of what the OSC member have up and running. Just hop on over:

Slogan Statistics Page

Try not to stress the server too much, it is a cheap one. Comments are welcome.

I obviously can't help you there... but oh well, at least it is sitting comfortably, up there, backed by 160 votes! That's great!

More and more high quality slogans around! By now you need at least a 71% rating to find yourself in the top 100. When I started it, 68% was still enough!

Oh, and I am in, once again... with those 71% : ) Thanks to all voters!

New things to come! If you look at my "About me" section then at the top you will see a crude first version of a dynamically created image showing my MSQ and how it compares with another OSC member's MSQ. The other member changes automatically from time to time.
The picture will get nicer in the future and the concept might still change a bit. Once it's finished I will include an HTML generator on my Statistics Page so that everyone can grab the code to include it in the about section or in comments or blog posts.

What does MSQ stand for?
colorfool
colorfool on Mar 08 '09 at 11:48am
Mystical Sloganeering Quotient : ) It is explained in more detail in the comments. It is supposed to be mystical, though, so I won't explain again.
SuperRyan
SuperRyan on Mar 08 '09 at 6:37pm
I still do not understand MSQ...
colorfool
colorfool on Mar 08 '09 at 6:43pm
Did you go through the comments and read it up? Basically it was born from the thought that the average rating alone doesn't do a sloganeer justice. Because someone with an average rating of 50% but only 1 slogan is probably not as great as someone with a 50% average on say 100 slogans. So the MSQ takes into account the amount of slogans and votes you got and also the average rating and makes it into a comparable number. In future versions of the formula many other factors might be incorporated.

FRICKINAWESOME in another blog:
hahaha, fun idea Colorfool pitting some friendly competition against one another in the OSC. As long as its friendly, no scraped knees or shattered feelings.

Certainly. That is also part of the reason why the program choses your "opponent" randomly. So you can't just use it to show off.

Anyways, I am not sure what the final version will be like. It could also just show your MSQ on some sort of diploma style background? Or it could show a graph of how your MSQ develops over time? Any thoughts? Which kind of option might you want to paste into your profile, blog or other blogs comments?
PuppetMeat
PuppetMeat on Mar 09 '09 at 5:41am
I like the diploma style background idea, as well as showing the MSQ's development over time (really like this idea). I think showing your MSQ rank overall might be nice, so you can really see where everyone stands. Although that may be more useful as separate page within the statistics site.

Either way, I like what you have up now. The friendly competition aspect is a very nice touch.

This just keeps improving man, I honestly don't know what else to suggest. Maybe a search function by keywords?

Also, I like the idea of posting your top5 and MSQ in the profile, think that is pretty sweet.

Thanks Krimson! Yeah, I want to get this thing a bit more into people profiles instead of just having it on a separate page. Since the threadless community is what it is all about : )

awesome work colorfool! was going to make something like this myself, but since you've already done it I cbb :P

quick ques...how does the "New Slogans" work? Is it just all the recently added slogans by OSC members? coz it feels a few too little slogans for such a large club :P (seems like all slogans listed have at least a certain # of votes)

and a suggestion - maybe have a page where it lists slogans with fewest votes? maybe limit to say 5 max per user - that way slogans with less votes can get easier attention?
toopersent
toopersent on Mar 17 '09 at 9:48am
I was going to ask the same thing about the new slogans page
colorfool
colorfool on Mar 17 '09 at 10:15am
My whole slogan processing code ignores every slogan with less then 15 votes. 15 votes are usually achieved by normal voting within 48 hours, so that shouldn't be a problem. The reason is that I don't want these slogans to influence the stats and I also want to give people a chance to delete the really crappy stuff before it appears on the list.

It is difficult to believe, but even members of the OSC, me included, sometimes submit stuff which is no good. I wouldn't want to read through everything. If a member decides before vote 15 that he/she can do better, then I don't want to see the first version.
colorfool
colorfool on Mar 17 '09 at 10:23am
Now to answer the second of pyko's questions: It seems too little for such a large club. Err... actually every slogan that survives the first 15 votes will appear. Only it might not happen in anything like real time. The thing is that I don't have cron jobs on my very cheap web space. Also my script execution time is very limited. So what do I do?

Every time someone calls up the stats of any member, that member's slogans are updated. Also the slogans of the longest-non-updated member are updated. That way after about 125 visits to the site every sloganeers data got parsed once.

Right now it takes about 4 days for this to happen. Traffic on the site is rising, so I expect to be more real time, soon. Also once I start this profile picture thing, I will use this to trigger updates. That should work perfectly and make for up to date at all times.
colorfool
colorfool on Mar 17 '09 at 10:25am
And your last suggestion... interesting thought. Should I care about slogans with less then 15 votes? Any more thoughts on this? Would you want to see all slogans? Or just those within a certain percentage range?

hmm, i agree with your 15 votes cut off limit - makes sense and probably encourages more voting (due to automatic culling of really stupid/crappy/silly typos)

maybe, similar to my idea but it is minimum of 15 (with votes of 15 starting at the top of the list?) Also, I think since it is to encourage ppl to vote for more OSC members, I would say limit to 3~5 entries per member - since once you are on the slogan page, you see all their slogans (and if like me I just can't resist but to go through them all and read it!)
