Ok so a friend of mine told me that i use photoshop for doing things that would probably be much easier to do in Illustrator. I've been using photoshop since i was about 11 so i know my way in and out of it, but for some reason illustrator just makes no sense to me. I never really had to use the pen tool in photoshop so the one in illustrator is a mystery to me. I just don't understand how to use any of the tools (i'm using cs4 btw). Anyway, anyone know of any good tutorials to use or easy ways to learn about illustrator?

You might want to pick up a tutorial book from the bookstore... one of the ones that comes with a CD of projects that it walks you through. That's a great way to really dive in and learn the different tools you can use. Also, if you want to practice with the pen tool, maybe try scanning in some French Curves and try tracing those. It's a good exercise.

don't draw in illustrator. draw on paper in black ink or pencil and then scan it and clean it up in photoshop to make the lines sharp. save as a psd and open that in illustrator and perform a live trace (under objects dropdown menu). drag the vectorized result back into photoshop and go from there.

the pen tool in photoshop is about as useful as a bag full of cocks and knickers tied to a balloon made out of pants in the ocean on a rainy day in September

I'd do what smusi says, but instead of using Livetrace, which won't teach you how to use the pen and other tools, trace over the lines using the pen tool to get practice using it.

As a designer, the only thing I ever use the pentool in photoshop for is clipping paths for photos, I rarely draw in photoshop, and if i do it's with a tablet and the brushes..I'm a firm believer in Illustrator, and once you get a hang of the pentool, it really becomes easy and enjoyable to use! it just takes practice..

Well yah i mostly edit photos in photoshop so there was never a need for the pen tool which is why i totally don't understand the illustrator one.
