i know there is a certain amount of idea sharing that happens across the globe around the same time....but this comes out almost a year and a half after the madness of mission six....so go figure.

i think what ticks me off most is I am currently doing a complete redesign of mission 6 for my own shirts and prints (and because legally, the old one is threadless's now)...
because to be honest although i felt the concept of mission 6 was strong, I always knew i rushed the artwork on it to get it in the old '5 color contest' dealine over chrismas holiday when i was out of town and did not have the time, supplies, or personal computer at my disposal. I was getting set to launch my new clean, retooled, slightly reimagined version and then a fan of mission 6 wrote me asking if i had prints, and lead me to this japanese style version.

what do you guys think.
same layout, except mirrored (as it would be in eastern art), same concept, if you ask me

It was bound to happen eventually. Take it as a compliment that your idea was fantastic enough to have people in other cultures implement it in their own style.

that's beautifully rendered...
lunchboxbrain
lunchboxbrain on Jun 11 '08 at 8:18am
it's a tough call because the concept is pretty much the same but the execution is completely different so it's hard to call it a complete rip-off.
SoulfumeInc
SoulfumeInc on Jun 11 '08 at 8:18am
i see the similarity, but its got a nice twist on it. the concept might have been a little hijacked, but at least the art is original enough
roadkill3d
   roadkill3d on Jun 11 '08 at 8:20am
But knowing the guy is aware of threadless makes it so much more a ripoff.
eskimokiss

trav, your first 2 prints aren't showing up in the 'check out my winners' section to the right
travis76
   travis76 on Jun 11 '08 at 8:24am
it just sucks because i'm working on my own 'beautifully rendered version' now. i never felt the original was up to snuff and was always surprised it took off like it did, which says more about the concept, i guess.

so to see the story taken be batim, in a new (old) setting, and printed before i can reprint my revision, is a big pisser.

can ya feel me?

I wouldn't be too quick to point the finger. Similar concepts, and similar layout. Who knows? It may have been inspired by yours (espeically if this guy is aware of Threadless), but I can't see this illustration making an impact on your earnings. Plus - Yours is conveniently datestamped in the Threadless achives.

If yours was the inspiration, then take that compliment on the chin. I think some people on Threadless get too possessive and precious about their ideas and artwork, sometimes. It just means it's time to come up with even more, even better ideas! I know some people will disagree with me. Perhaps time to start work on the next mission? :)

If it's any consolation, yours (rushed or not) is the better of the two and is much more suitable as a Pac-man homage. If you feel aggrieved, shoot him an email to ask if he was aware of your work and whether he thinks that his idea is too similar.

i agree with fatheed too. but yeah, if he's a threadless regular, and the threadless image has made it's way allllll over the gaming internets, i'm told and have seen...i just bet he doesn't even know where he picked up the idea.

oh well, i'll make money one day.

Yeah, don't let this stunt any plans to rework it. I'd really love to see the redux, but I should say that part of the appeal for me was that you only used 5 colours. I remember being especially impressed with how you shaded the box of pills using 4 colours - I'd buy this as a screen print on paper, for sure - something about limited colours and traditional techniques holds real appeal. If it was a fancy full colour print, then the appeal might not be there... I dunno.

How frustrating. The guy could at least acknowledge you as inspiration. I know it's possible that he came up with this entirely on his own, but it seems highly unlikely.

Keep in mind that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Plus, your deity-like status at threadless hasn't been tarnished one bit.
maija
maija on Jun 11 '08 at 9:26am
From the tone of his other blog posts on the topic (and an earlier working of the idea) I think it's just a case of yet another one of our generation having a fit of post-modern revisionist nostalgia. If he had a space theme going on it might be a cause for concern.

Reworking old ideas with a new narrative certainly did not originate with Madness of Mission Six. There have been dozens of submissions here at Threadless (if not hundreds) that are parodies or pastiches of '80s pop culture, many of them in the vein of "What if video game characters were real?"

I mean, most artwork from the Renaissance on has been contemporary re-imaginings of old stories embedded in the public consciousness.

In the words of Michael Chabon: all fiction is fan-fiction.

And ideas can't be copyrighted.

maija
maija on Jun 11 '08 at 9:29am
His isn't even about a guy being haunted to madness; it's about a warrior battling ghosts. Apart from Pac-Man as the inspiration there is no similarity.

If anyone should be annoyed about their idea being lifted it should be Namco.

chelly on Jun 11 '08 at 9:47am
his is a twist
yours is a homage

at least he didn't just copy/paste your work and call it his own

if anything, if you rework yours you can hop on his blog and say "hey, if y'all like this, then you'll love mine" and make a few bucks

Whether that other guy was inspired by you or not, I don't even see why you would even bother comparing it to Mission 6. Your design is a really clever and well drawn interpretation of a classic video game. The other link you posted is a mediocre drawing and the samurai concept doesn't even remotely make sense in relation to the Pac Man world. I would delete this blog and never speak of that other design again, if I were you!

Wow I'm a damn idiot. At first I was like "what, it's just stylistically similar". I have seen your design a hundred times and for some reason did NOT get that it was a pac man thing. I wasn't around when it was being scored so maybe I have a tiny excuse. That being said...yeah I can see how you'd be pretty bummed, esp since you were going to jazz yours up. I bet it's not gonna be a huge issue though.

ugh...really? travis...REALLY?

so, the Authority is a rip off of the Avengers which is a rip off of JLA...or wait...no. no rip offs...the concepts are similar, implimentation is not. at all. and what of the game pac man...i'm sure that's been ripped off plenty of times through the years...maybe dig dub...similar concept but not the same...

really?
it's rather...arrogant even to regard your illustration as the birth of this kind of concept.

I don't know if anyone else who's been hanging around threadless for far too long (like myself) gets really excited when under-printed designers put out a sure thing - but I know I do. I feel the same way about this as when I first saw "No Peeking" by Jublin. That "THIS is a print and it couldn't happen to a better person."
Enjoy your...uh...12 pack of Red Bull.
