i saw better off dead again yesterday and think i finally like it better than the obvious choice, one crazy summer.

i mean, you have the 'two dollars!' bicycle kid, the racing japanese guys, booger in a top hat, and what i feel is a more touching story. plus the french chick is way hotter than raspy ol' demi moore.

she made me wish we hosted a foreign exchange student back when i was like 10.

one crazy summer has that whole cartoonist thing that i used to identify with, but bobcat goldthwait and the rest just get on my nerves now.

so what's the verdict?

whoever loses, Cusack wins.

one crazy summer also has the TIRED premise of 'we have to raise money/win a race/save the neighborhood premise.

better off only has a ski race.

Better Off Dead eeks it out in a close one.

While One Crazy Summer has slightly more star power with Demi, B.O.D has Booger from Revenge of the Nerds and that ridiculous one-footed ski race to cap the movie.

My wife and I are big Cusack fans and there are only a few movies of his that we haven't seen.

one crazy summer wins for me because of all the small side stories due to the odd characters, ala caddyshack

better off dead is great, but when i watch it i feel as though i'm seeing the made-for-tv version because something is missing

both are excellent of course

one day me and spacesick are going to build a time machine so we can go back and relive and dominate the eighties, i swear.

my nostalgia gland is infected and swollen lately

Haven't seen the first one, but was always a fan of OCS, if not for anything other than the cute little fuzzy bunnies getting slaughtered.

Better Off Dead is by far and away the epic of the Savage trilogy...er, two movie-ology. sure, One Crazy Summer has more money shots for the artists on Threadless, but it's such a better-crafted premise and really captures the oddity of high school year way better.

Here's more reasons:

-Language lessons!
-learning English from the wide world of sports
-I'm sory your mom blew up ricky.
-that creepy actor from Ghost as the techer who asks out beth.
-how to pick up trashy women
-van halen's animation hamburger comes to life sequence
-i want my two dollars!
-my granmother dropped acid and hijacked a busload of penguins.
-this is pure snow...it's everywhere!
-man, why would someone throw away a perfectly good white boy?

And of course,

RICKY!!!!

Better off Dead, but I love both movies so that was a hard pick. I have to say the part in One Crazy Summer where they blow off the back of the boat and use the Car engine to fly by everyone was great, the line "Ricky, I'm sorry your Mom blew up." from Better off dead is just Classic.

but spacesick's soul is like 40.
i can't figure him out.

i think i like BOD better in my old age because of the way it was filmed and edited- it plays itself straight, whereas OCS does things too knowingly.

As much as I want to say Better Off Dead I'm having a tough time dismissing any movie that contains a guy buried in the sand up to his neck under a fat guy in a lawn chair eating a giant can of beans and getting laid out by a fart...also, the look of concern afterwards on the fat guy's face is hilarious.

Maturity level is not a factor in our decision, is it?

I'm really not seeing a coneivable way that OCS is a funnier or better movie than BOD. I thought this was Science fact already!

I saw BOD when I was about 20. So OCS has that nostalgic appeal to me. Doesn't necessarily mean it's better.

I believe you mean "tentacles."

Better Off Dead is an all time favorite. I wouldn't even know where to start in saying what my favorite bit is - same thing for Ferris Buehler. I could MAYBE narrow it down, but the whole thing is back to back epic awesomeness.

better off dead, no question about it.

when i was in high school that video had a waiting list at the three rental stores in town. to order a copy, you had to pay what the rental stores paid for it, that was about 80 bucks and i had the friends dumb enough to buy one.

One Crazy Summer's high points as i remember them:

-as ISA said, the back slapping faces staying on the girls
-bobcat goldwaith was in it in major drug abuse top form
-hanging up hoop's friend as the basketball hoop.
-i know DOW.
-Hoops getting stuck in the sand.
-the grandmother charging her family for her meals.
-the uncle who sits upstairs all day long in front of the radio and telephone to be the caller who wins a zillion dollars (possible 100,000 bucks)?
-the godzilla scene as already mentioned by ISA
-the kids toilet papering hoops up.
-the shitty girl totally drenching Demi's character in a gi-huge-ic puddle with her car.
-the making of their epic animated trailer.
-the motor at the end of the film and cutting off snoopy's tongue and eating it.
-that jock kid's whole character...it is simply amazing. I don't know why i am so amused by him cranking around a target of lobsters so much.
-the lobster screaming horribly when put into the boiling water.

ok that's it, but you get the point! It's a good flick, just not as incredible and gorund-breaking and well put together as BOD.

I think i'm more of a Summer Rental and The Great Outdoors guy myself when it comes to family vacation movies from the 80's, but One Crazy Summer is a fun fun time in front of the totally boob-tubular.

Better Off Dead by far. In addition to the aforementioned reasons, consider also...

Two asians. One doesn't speak english, the other learned from watching ABC Sports.

Ricky put his testicles all over the french girl.

"Buck up, little camper!"

On top of all that, when was the last time obsession, suicide attempts, and drug addicts were that hilarious?

I don't know if anyone else who's been hanging around threadless for far too long (like myself) gets really excited when under-printed designers put out a sure thing - but I know I do. I feel the same way about this as when I first saw "No Peeking" by Jublin. That "THIS is a print and it couldn't happen to a better person."
Enjoy your...uh...12 pack of Red Bull.
