It's my 3rd submission, what you guys think?

Hey guys this mite sound like an amateur question but i'm abit stuck when it comes to choosing colours for my designs. I currently choose a max of 8 cmyk colour swatches in illustator but now I'm thinking are we suppose to choose pantones? and if so do we use solid coated?
Also when in photoshop do you just work in cmyk? or duotone?
Any advice would be awesome as I'm still starting out here.
