I hope not!
Max Records (the kid who's playing Max and who played little Stephen in The Brothers Bloom) is pretty awesome for a 12 year old.
I have faith.

Seriously, that interview makes me wish he was my little brother.

Also, my own brother went to a screening of it in LA and he says it's pretty good.

haha silly! a lot of people feared that the new Star Wars movies weren't going to be any good. that they would be awful and would somehow taint a wonderful childhood memory

but clearly those fears were unfounded

I know this is a little off track but has anyone seen Fantastic Mr.Fox yet? That has to be good too right?

but if i expect goodness and its remotely bad i will be disappointed

but a movie like Cloudy came in with much lower expectations.

most of Spike Jonze's other movies scored better. he is well liked by the critics.

I think the high expectations factor into the score

Well, right now it's all advanced screenings and stuff, so the rating isn't really a good representation. I mean, my brother saw it with a bunch of his work buddies and they all work for a movie production company so of course they're all critical moviegoers. But, from what I hear from those who have seen it, they say it is good. Spike Jonze keeps it simple like the book, he doesn't add extra story-lines of any of that nonsense, and that the whole feel of the movie really came through.

I don't know. I'm trying to keep my expectations low. But it's hard.

hype gives nerdy internet reviewers an automatic angle for their articles. nothing ever lives up to hype. in the future, publicists will try to "un-"publicize the works of their clients, instead opting for the ideal "slow" building of a fan base.

Spike Jonze is amazing- don't listen to reviews just see it for yourself.

There have been loads of movies i didn't see at first cos they had poor/medicore reviews, and then when i finally caught them I loved them.

But seriously- has anyone seen fantastic mr. fox.? It's out here on friday, i can't wait!

movie reviewers don't have any special knowledge that a regular film-goer doesn't have.

well exactly. My comment was directed toward Khol when she said it's in early stages so the reviews aren't going to be an adequate representation of how the rest of the world will feel.

mike bautista
mike bautista on Oct 14 '09 at 10:27pm
But even though, Ben.
There isn't even a marketing campaign for this over here. Are there TV spots in your town?

And Emily, I have not wondered about the possibility of this happening. I've just been giddy to see this film for a very long time. And reading this has made me sadface hardcore.

But biases aside, I can see how the film can be unfavorable to certain viewers. Yes, Spike Jonze is a brilliant director, he is one of my favorites. But Adaptation and Being John Malkovich had one thing that WtWTA doesn't: Charlie Kaufman. It's safe to say that much of the critical accolades went to Kaufman, Jonze was just the perfect man to visualize it. I'll be curious to see how the film narrative in this film will be without an established screenwriter.
That being said, Spike did help pen the script and story, and he has experience. He also has Dave Eggers. I can's speak for myself on this, but I've heard he's a very good author, though he's not an experienced film writer. And he apparently wrote Away We Go, which got pretty good reviews.
And I've been grabbing everything I can about this movie. For people who griped about the lack of narrative, Spike said a lot of what they filmed were just them doing things and the crew letting the camera roll. The editing process was just grabbing what magical moments came out of it.
Also, Maurice Sendak stated that there'd be controversy with this film. I don't think in the moral sense, but just in how it plays out. Spike made it a very personal film , what it meant for him. There were even delays to the film's release for a whole year, because during the first test screenings, people complained about it. I doubt it will be a conventional "children's film", which is probably what people will be critiquing it as.

I write too much. Fuck, I wanna see this movie. And I'm not saying it'll be good or not, just saying I can see how people wouldn't like it... without me actually seeing it.
Khol
Khol on Oct 14 '09 at 10:30pm
Oh, I just meant that it's a smaller group of people in terms of rotten tomatoes.
A smaller group of people rating a movie is going to produce different results for when a larger group starts seeing it.

Am I making sense?
Maybe not.
Either way, I have hope. And if I'm disappointed I'll write angry letters to Spike Jonze for ruining my childhood.

The book is like a few sentences, so there's not a lot to "ruin" in my opinion.
If it turns out to be not as great as I'm hoping it will be, then oh well, another disappointing movie.

What Kholla is saying makes sense. Think of it like analyzing literature. Those who are trained/respected in the field might hate things like Harry Potter, but a lot of people who read for a good story LOVE Harry Potter.

It's not that movie critics have something that regular movie-watches don't, they just are better at focusing their knowledge.

movie reviewers don't have any special knowledge that a regular film-goer doesn't have.

Well, sometimes their film majors that have spent their lives studying film. So, I'd say that their knowledge might be a little specialized.

Anway, I usually don't agree with most movie crits.

yeah, i kinder said that wrong. what i mean to say is that a critic's opinion doesn't carry more weight than anyone else's. he/she may be able to approach a film from a different angle or provide insight into this or that, but that doesn't mean you're going to like it or hate it just because that individual has good/bad things to say about it.

i will add that i don't see many of the major reviewers as that learned in the art of film-making. they turn out some nice puns though.

i think if there wasn't so much hype surrounding the movie -- if people walked into the theater not knowing anything about the film at all -- they'd probably end up having a better experience on the whole.

most of the negative reviews' biggest complaint is that there isn't really much of a plot to the movie. if those dumb fuckers had paid ANY attention during the entire production of this film, they would know that there isn't supposed to be much of a plot. it's childhood imagination!
