walked out to my car this morning and my window was smashed in and the stereo Kevin got me for my birthday + my iPod were gone. The policeman dusted for fingerprints. A couple other cars were hit worse than I was, and in such an open area I think robbing cars during a thunderstorm is the way to do it :/

I know it's just stuff but it's a strange feeling when things are taken from you and all that's left is a hole in my dashboard and a whole lot of shattered glass.

Yep. I got burgled 3 times inside 2 months at university.

Bit late, but you probably shouldn't leave valuables in your car.

They just caught the guy who broke into our place while we were sleeping. He had a gun with him when the police arrested him. He's looking at 5+ years and being deported after that. (he robbed like 30 people). It took a few months, but I am real happy they got him.

I had my apartment broken into once. They took an acoustic guitar and the super 8 camera I had since I was a kid (which was pretty much worthless except for sentimental value). It was such a disturbing feeling knowing a stranger had been in your apartment going through all your stuff and emptying out your clothes onto the floor.

A few weeks ago he last day we were staying in a room me and one of my roomates had our wallets emytied of cash. He kept trying to figure out who had done it and kept saying it was this guy we knew. I didn't really care and just thought it was the maids.

Speaking of which I should probably check my debit card to make sure there have been no extra withdrawls lately.

Someone recently got into my car at night while I was sleeping and took my gps and two pairs of expensive boxing gloves. I felt violated every time I got into my car for several weeks knowing that some jerkface had been in there taking my things. Thieves are the lowest of low.

someone kicked in the front door of the place I was living in a couple of years ago... I was just renting an upstairs bedroom and my room was a DISASTER before they got there, so luckily none of my stuff was taken... but the people I lived with had A LOT of stuff taken. It was terrible, and we all felt really unsafe for a long time there.

wow - that's awful. I'm so sorry for you.

I've actually never been burgled. I have been mugged once though, which wasn't fun. It was about 8 years ago at a train station. The guy made off with my hand bag and everything in it. Luckily i had my mobile in my pocket so at least i called the cops. It was pretty :( I didn't do too well in the dark after that - had to get meds!! grr.

i also have obscene luck.

i've left phones, wallets, and handbags behind in public places before and they have always been handed back to me, with money intact.

once i was like 9 and i left my wallet at the beach after spending the day there. it had like over $200 cash (my christmas and birthday money) cos i was going to go buy this thing at some store after the beach. some dude guy handed it into the police and i got it back, with my christmas money + birthday money still in it. i wanted to thank the guy but for legal reasons they couldn't tell me who handed it in.

I was once mugged in an alley by three stoners who's high on meth or something. They don't want my wallet, just my life I think. Until people saw what's happening and intervened. True story.
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Oct 13 '09 at 11:02pm
I had my wallet stolen out of my bag during PE at high school. Then a week later some kid in another class claimed that he found it and when I asked him where it was he said it was in this alley next to the school between the school and a block of flats. But instead of picking it up, he just left it there. Supposedly. I was pretty suspicious of him. I went to look for it but couldn't find it. but about two weeks later someone who lived in the flats found it and called my dad. It only had about 55 cents in it, but it had all my train and bus passes which I had already had to get replaced.

But I think that's the worst that's ever been stolen from me. Two guys tried to break in a couple of months ago but we called the police and chased them away so they didn't get anything.

I've been pretty lucky overall.

the 6 months before i left Cape Town, my car got bust into 3 times.
fortunately i learnt the lesson after the first go and made sure i always took everything out.

then when i got to the UK, a company i was working for at the time gave me a car and i came out one morning to find someone had stripped it - in fact it was more like they had a shopping list with exactly what they needed and only taken those pieces - the right fender and door, the left headlight, some parts from the engine, the parcel shelf, the front left inside door panel, the window mechanism so on and so forth.
i had only had the car for like a week.
clearly i need to live in better areas!

embarrassing theft story - a few year back the house i was living in was broken into when no one was home. the thieves were interrupted by a neighbour and in their panic to grab and get out pretty much trashed the place.

So i come home and the cops are there and your guy's telling me what happened and he says they trashed the downstairs and looks like the did a pretty good job of one of the rooms upstairs too. So he takes me up to show me so I can point out if anything has gone missing and he takes me into my room, the apparently ransacked one.
I take one look around and i'm like "um, it actually looks like this all the time. I'm pretty certain they haven't been in here and this is just how I left it."
i was mortified, cop couldn't stop pissing himself laughing for about a half hour

geez digsy! That's crazy!

People in good neighborhoods, bad neighborhoods, safe neighborhoods, and with alarms get broken into all the time. After this happened to me I heard a ton of stories from my friends and family. You don't have to live in a bad area to have your property damaged or stolen :/

Ugh. I'm sorry that happened to you.

When I was pregnant with my older daughter my husband had bought me a radio for my car (the kind where the faceplate comes off); he installed it and left the empty box on the floorboards (who needs a trashcan?). When I got to work the next day I took the faceplate in with me. When leaving for lunch one of my coworkers came running through the parking lot saying she had been in her car smoking and heard a car alarm and saw a guy run off. She thought it was my car, so I took off (i.e. waddled) as fast as I could and sure enough, the moron had broken out my driver's-side window upon seeing the box on the opposing floorboard. Because of my car alarm he ran off, so nothing was stolen, thank goodness. All because of a stupid empty box.

Good thing he didn't peek in the back of my Explorer; it was chock full of electric hand-tools for my husband for Christmas and a bunch of other Christmas gifts.

The only time we've had something stolen was in broad daylight; we live on a major highway on about 250 acres of farmland behind us. I was at work and my husband was out mowing the yard. He left the garage door up because we parked our mower in the garage at the time. He was never out of view of the house or the garage but in the 30 minutes he was on the mower someone managed to walk in and steal a bunch of the previously-mentioned hand tools and an enormous set of drill bits. This person would have had to walk up our driveway on foot (our house sits about a hundred yards off the road but the driveway is long and runs parallel to the road about 300 yards), take the stuff, and leave on foot with nowhere to hide but the woods at the end of our drive.
