Clearly this is a very polarizing design: love it or hate it, vote or don't. Much love either way it's on the chopping block.

ginetteginette on Oct 16 '08

it's been done, and better.

xiv on Oct 16 '08

maybe it should be discussed again?

againstbound on Oct 16 '08

We've already discussed this too.

fatheed on Oct 16 '08

It's patently a rip-off of an existing printed design. If you were told about 'Ticket To Ride' and still carried on with this one, you've wasted your time in my opinion.

votard on Oct 16 '08

RIP OFF.

ZERO

brookeboard on Oct 16 '08

a great one. duh. just kidding, i hope i'm more modest than that. i love creating art, great enough for that clothing company junkfood to steal that's for sure. but i got my settlement and that's all that matters. :-)

WTF?

FULL OF SHIT.

this design fails:(

fatheed

I'm kinda surprised that the Threadmods put this into the running. Some people will give you a favourable comment and a nice score - especially your friends who you've got to comment, but most people will see this as a pretty shameless rip-off. Shameless being the word, as by your own confession you copied Olly's and said 'who's it going to hurt'.

And in the comments on your design or crit, you make it clear that some company copied a design of yours and you took action resulting in a settlement. ??? So it's ok to steal as long as it's not yours?

People are not just being precious - no matter what your friends say about how great your version is, the reality is, it sucks because it's stolen.

I'm just baffled that you actually think it's alright. How about you come up with your own ideas?

does anyone have a link to the original? i'm not familiar with it
brookeboard
brookeboard on Oct 16 '08 at 11:49pm
nothing was stolen and it's it NOT okay to steal. i was a victim of having art stolen. i absolutely hate it. me saying "what's it hurting?" wasn't me implying that i stole olly's at all.

because olly's was submitted first and is amazing maybe means i shouldn't have submitted mine, but maybe not. i did NOT rip off his design. i actually wanted to buy it after it was brought to my attention. back off.
fatheed
   fatheed on Oct 16 '08 at 11:51pm
Under Olly's Woss account.

I blame Joe for this. He gave it the green light. Olly's going to be heartbroken.

courtneycatastrophe on Oct 16 '08

dude. this is beyound sweet. i would buy it both as a print and a shirt!

cyndiekaye on Oct 16 '08

Absolutely love the ticket stubs!!!! Always wanted to know what to do with my collection. I think I'll wear them. Definitely would wear this and print it for my wall!!!

Some people do guitars for art but I love the idea of ticket stubs!

chiquitz787 on Oct 16 '08

Design rocks my socks. If you don't like it...go tell your mom!!!

thefatunicorn on Oct 16 '08

I like it. Very nice placement and good job rendering your idea =) Those whining about it being similar to the other shirt need to get a life. This shirt is superior in craft and a different subject.

courtneycatastrophe on Oct 16 '08

i agree with thefatunicorn

scotties123 on Oct 16 '08

dude this is a thousand times better than the plane one. this has concert ticket stubs only, the plane one has random crap that has nothing to do with a plane. print this in black so i can buy it. good work.

all but one of those commenters signed up in the past few weeks. they're not going to care what's been done in the past like regulars do. i wouldn't actually call it a ripoff exactly, but considering it's the exact same method you have to at least have been influenced by the original. perhaps not but i find it hard to believe in a coincidence that big. besides which i get the impression several people told you it would be in poor taste to submit it and you did it anyway, so you shouldn't be surprised if it causes a shitstorm.
fatheed
   fatheed on Oct 17 '08 at 12:04am
Ok, I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. Let's say you never saw Ticket To Ride before you did yours...

If I was you, I'd say 'Woah! What were the odds an identical concept being aleady printed?' and I'd be a bit gutted, but then I'd go back to the drawing board and try to think up something else. The idea of the critique in part is to listen to what people say. Especially the bits you don't want to hear.
d3d
   d3d on Oct 17 '08 at 12:06am
you've got some nerve fatheed. you talk like someone who has a dozen original ideas per week and the wad of prints to back it up.

in the end, this isn't going to be printed here, no matter how many nice comments you receive.

so if your intention was to just show off your art and give threadless the rights to hold it for 90 days, there you go!
brookeboard
brookeboard on Oct 17 '08 at 12:13am
ISABOA, ew.

fatheed, there were negative feedbacks in the critique and it was in the critique in which i was enlightened about the plane design. but i also got a lot of positive feedback that pushed me to submit. i got more submits then i did not.

my design and i are far from who all of are implying and assuming.
brookeboard
brookeboard on Oct 17 '08 at 12:14am

againstbound
   againstbound on Oct 17 '08 at 12:16am
90% of the positive feedback received in critiques is not honest, specially when it's followed by a link.
sonmi
   sonmi on Oct 17 '08 at 12:17am
i'm not implying, but the fact is that threadless won't print two concepts so similar, no matter how well done it was...
brookeboard
brookeboard on Oct 17 '08 at 12:17am
sonmi, if i didn't think it had a chance i wouldn't have submitted it. i honestly didn't think it'd be compared as much as it has. i had/have no intentions of "showing off" my art. again, i'm not this monster everyone is making me out to be.
brookeboard
brookeboard on Oct 17 '08 at 12:18am

sonmi
   sonmi on Oct 17 '08 at 12:20am
it's just... it doesn't have a chance. :\

a lot of the people who are giving input on this are very, very familiar with threadless' catalog and printing habits. and... printing two things so identical, no matter if you knew about the other or not, is just a bad business move for them. it means choosing this design over one that can offer more variety in their catalog.

but anyway.. this isn't a pass on your character at all by me. just my opinion of its chances.
fatheed
   fatheed on Oct 17 '08 at 12:20am
I think you probably underestimated how seriously (most) people here take copying/theft/ripping off. People here make a living from their art and design as both professionals and enthusiasts and all recognize the importance of intellectual property.
ISABOA
   ISABOA on Oct 17 '08 at 12:23am
i think you should make one of these real big in a shadow box for your own wall - out of real tickets and tacks. Then one day many years after you are dead someone will bring it onto antiques road show.
brookeboard
brookeboard on Oct 17 '08 at 12:30am
fatheed, i absolutely did not underestimate how serious people take copying/theft/riping off. as i said before, i've been ripped off and it's a crappy feeling. although i did get compensated and a letter of apology. had i underestimated such i'd never have submitted my design. i didn't think they were that comparable.

i know the truth and i know i didn't rip him off. had i done such i wouldn't be so adamant.
fatheed
   fatheed on Oct 17 '08 at 12:31am
We're nice people, I promise. You sound reasonable. It's just you should have listened to warnings on the crit. If there's one thing I've learned on the critique it's to always pay attention to the negative comments. Even if you think they're wrong, keep an open mind. Don't be put off submitting. Start a new design now and don't hang around waiting for the guitar to finish scoring because whatever happens, it won't print for the reasons sonmi mentioned.

thank you for all of your insights, enlightenments, suggestions, criticisms (constructive or not), insults, compliments and so forth. this has been one tough learning experience. many of your words were hard to swallow, yet taken into consideration. i digress with an open mind and apologies to olly for ever submitting this. i'll take it elsewhere. i'll say this once more, olly, i did not rip you off. i am now a fan of yours after this huge enlightenment. thank you and goodnight.

brookeboard
brookeboard on Oct 17 '08 at 4:35pm
geez. i can't do anything right. i'm tired of apologizing and being beaten down. i only did what threadless asked me to do, promote the heck out of my t-shirt design:

"Promo Tool 1 - Website Submission Banner

Use the banner provided below on your website to direct your own users to your submission for viewing and scoring.

Promo Tool 2 - Submission Email Forward

Edit and forward the other email you've been sent to all your friends to help spread the word about Threadless and promote your submission. "

sorry i don't have a fancy website and my myspace is the best tool for connecting with people. i'm about sick of this uppety threadless community. i try to get involved and get accused of "stealing" then get hit hard by the threadless community even more and i've had enough. it seems childish but i feel like taking down my threadless stickers, giving away my threadless purchases and deleting my account and saying good riddance.

at first i considered it a learning experience, now it's just leaving a bad taste in my mouth. the threadless community is ruthless. i can only apologize so many times for ONE wrong move and then i get hit again.
welshalex
welshalex on Oct 17 '08 at 4:43pm
I think youve been given a pretty rough ride here. Lots of people would have deleted their account & told everyone to shove it a long time ago. I often find the community here strange, there can be a real gang mentality. I dont think youve done anything particularly wrong, & people have been forgiven for MUCH worse. Maybe see what tomorrow brings?
ginetteginette
   ginetteginette on Oct 17 '08 at 5:01pm
i don't know about other people, but i never thought you did anything you should apologize for either, but as you said about the bad taste in your mouth, i think that's how a lot of us regulars here felt when we saw your design go through the critiquing process etc when someone already had a printed design of the same concept sold here.

from here and school though i've just learned that when you have an idea you think is great and original and it turns out not to be so original, you sort of just have to forget it and move on, and that's what really bewildered me about you continuing. what should have come out of the critique process is some ideas on how to make your design even more different than the plane one, but the whole critique space is pretty bogus a lot of the time because it's people complimenting others to get compliments in return. hardly anyone is TRULY critical. (but that's my personal beef with it)

i don't think you should be punished, and i didn't see anyone really bashing you, we're just being critical of your illustration and design choices. you and the design should be separate to best receive criticism without it hurting so much.

i'm rambling on and on and i don't think i'm making any sense but i also just want to say that this whole ordeal is not a big thing, no one is going to remember this much a few days from now after it's done scoring and so on. you should keep designing here, we truly are pretty friendly (but of course with that comes over-protectiveness because some of us are pretty close-knit).
