TUTORIAL!!
please ask if it still doesn't make sense

step1:
draw something in the middle of the page, no matter what DON'T go to the EDGES!
step1

step 2
cut it vertically and flip each side like so:
step2

step3:
cut it again but this time do it horizontally. Flip those. you should have what was once your center doodle, split to bits in each corner of it, good work!
step3

step 4
draw something rad in the middle of the page to fill it in, remember DON'T touch the EDGES!
step4

step 5
select it and create a pattern of it in photoshop, (name it something cool).
Open a new canvas
Use then paint bucket tool, set it to pattern, select "yourpatternname" fill the new canvas with the pattern you just made and then check out your cool drawing :)
good luck!

hey I have a question for you... when you're creating these patterns, what's the best way to test that they are seamless?
martiandrivein
   martiandrivein on Mar 23 '11 at 2:41pm
also...white.

grey, please dont ever stop your patterness streak
ratkiss
   ratkiss on Mar 23 '11 at 2:46pm
hi!

The way I make them and cut them makes them seamless so I don't know other than that :s
ratkiss
   ratkiss on Mar 23 '11 at 2:52pm
matt, thanks! I'm gonna make more ~ it's fun and challenging:)
martiandrivein
   martiandrivein on Mar 23 '11 at 2:55pm
wait... ok then how do you make them? haha I'm going to attempt a belt print, but I can't figure it out.
ratkiss
   ratkiss on Mar 23 '11 at 3:02pm
Here's me attempting my method
draw something in the middle of the screen/paper don't touch the edges at all, once you've got that covered, cut the paper horizontally and then flip the section and tape it the back of the paper (so your drawing is now cut and your drawn part is now on the top and bottom edge of the paper and your middle is empy)
Now cut it vertiacally, and flip and tape it so then your drawing will be in all 4 corners of the page.
be creative and fill in the middle with more stuff, have fun.

I can demonstrate it when I get to work on another one if it makes no sense at all.

oh and don't touch the edges when you fill in the middle or you'll mess up shiz
ratkiss
   ratkiss on Mar 23 '11 at 3:19pm
neither is a color option too

That's one crazy pattern! Can we see a close up?
psherman42
psherman42 on Mar 23 '11 at 3:47pm
Maybe on silver? I like the look of the grey behind the bird cages on the white one, but I'm not crazy about the white in between. The grey you mocked it up on seems a little dark to me, so of these two I'd go with the white.

I'd drop the opacity of both the blue/green and gray to about 70% and put it on silver.
ratkiss
   ratkiss on Mar 23 '11 at 4:15pm
stupidquestion:
If I drop the opacity, will it be printable?
NiNTH WHEEL
NiNTH WHEEL on Mar 23 '11 at 4:15pm
I just mean snag the spot color generated by doing so. I couldn't think of a better way to describe it.
ratkiss
   ratkiss on Mar 23 '11 at 4:16pm
I see, I'll give that a try now, brb

hmmm could you do a little more organized design just to see what it would look like?
like have all the same cages in a row, same with the birds, and the rotate them so they criss-cross like a X but still have their orientation straight up and down...i hope that isnt too confusing...
idk, just a thought...
ratkiss
   ratkiss on Mar 23 '11 at 5:02pm
I like to think of it as an organized mess;)
it's not so easy to do what you mentioned unless I redraw it all.

Yeah, that's more or less what I had (see below - but obviously not the correct scale):

Here are the RGB codes if that helps:
RGB 085 186 183
RGB 132 136 139

RGB 175 103 094
RGB 171 164 143
