It's Europe, we all speak here!

This blog was originally about how shipping costs suddenly changed (and went up 50% for US orders and 70% for international orders) and how nobody noticed.

Yes, I know oil prices have gone up, and that would rise shipping costs. I know shipping costs might have been relatively steady for a while, and the shipping company might have made a decision to suddenly raise the prices. I'm not dumb (although I do like bold - and underline). The problem here is that nobody paid attention to it. If food (or even t-shirt) prices had gone up by 70%, we'd all be complaining.

But that's not the point, because the Aussies kidnapped my blog. And now they're shouting (coffee?) on me (I like coffee, by the way - good coffee, not Starbucks crap) - I also discovered that in Australia, people don't earn $522 a week if they don't work full-time - it might be hard living there, although shipping there is as cheap as shipping to Europe, if you buy on Threadless. Mas eu adoro vocês - sério.

Original blog is below:
Why did Threadless shipping became so expensive?

I live in the European Union (Portugal), and my first order (Jul 29 2008, 1 t-shirt, 5-10 days) shipping was priced at $8.90. I thought about buying one Thriftee but the 5-10 days shipping came out marked at $15 (yes, fifteen for one tee - almost 70% up in less than a month), and the 1-3 weeks shipping marked at $11.

Just for comparison, my second order (Aug 8 2008, 5 t-shirts, 5-10 days) shipping was priced at $15.50. Ordering one t-shirt now costs in shipping the same as ordering five t-shirts less than a month ago.

What the hell is going on? How can you guys expect me to continue buying when the shipping costs more than the tees?

And please don't tell me to put more t-shirts on the same package. As you might know, Europe has a 22€ (around $32) limit and if you buy more than that on a parcel you need to pay import duties (12% for clothing + VAT, which is 20%+12%=32% in Portugal).

Yes, Portugal is far away from Chicago. Europe is far away from Chicago. But do you know that a lot of people who buy here don't live in the US of A? Geez.

Hey.... the faster shipping speeds that were announced the other day have disappeared... I was depending on those! I need a shirt this week as a present.... :(

hanzabean on Aug 23 '08 at 4:23pm
Included in that money are a few bucks necessary to grease various palms and stuff.

Also, you can get more shirts on sale under the Euro limit (maybe 2 or 3 if you get any of the $5 shirts).

But, yeah that sucks.
brunonery
brunonery on Aug 23 '08 at 4:25pm
Framble, the faster shipping speeds might have disappeared because they're still making tests. Fast shipping to Portugal with UPS put me in trouble with customs, since they declared the total value (tee+shipping) instead of only the tee value. It took me three days to clear it, i.e., the 1-3 day shipping turned out to be a 5-day shipping.

lol, that has nothing to do with the fact that the one small threadless factory in Chicago is far as balls away from Portugal. Give the guys some slack? Most of the customers started out as and still are from US and Canada, so they're still tweaking ways to ship it more conveniently across the pond I'm sure. Where has all of the patience gone from the world? Geez.
brunonery
brunonery on Aug 23 '08 at 4:34pm
Deadandroid, the question is not why it is expensive, is why it became so expensive. Less than a month ago it was $8.50, now it is $15 - some more days and it might double?

Please don't feed the trolls.

Please don't underline text on the Internet, people will think it's a link.

Seriously, people (specially you from Europe - yes, London, I'm talking to you - and Paris - and Berlin), what happened? Please tell me we won't have to take our business elsewhere (I personally don't want to).

Shipping prices have risen in general recently, 'cause of the gas and all. Don't know if that's related to this rise or not.
brunonery
brunonery on Aug 23 '08 at 5:19pm
In fact, ofthecoast, $8.90, then $9.50 and now $15.00 - $6.10, in less than a month. Are the gas prices on the US still going up? Here they started to drop a little. Anyway, I'd like to hear the Threadless guys say something about it.

Credit crunch.
brunonery
brunonery on Aug 23 '08 at 5:28pm
I can think about a lot of plausible reasons for the shipping costs going up: gas prices, credit crunch, green goblins from Patagonia, etc.

What I don't understand is how the shipping costs have gone up so fast - almost 70% in less than a month. Last time I checked the USA didn't have Zimbabwean inflation.

Well according to the rumour mill threadless is releasing a new shipping method that gets the tees to europe in a few days rather than weeks but that would be a big anouncement not snuck in.

brunonery
brunonery on Aug 23 '08 at 5:38pm
Yes, a new shipping method that gets tees to Europe in 1-3 days is soon to be release (in fact, I'm helping them test it). But this method costs like $25 for a t-shirt, so I'd only use it in case of emergency (someone's birthday present, for example).

For all my other orders I'd like to stick with the 5-10 days shipping (which was fine when it was priced at $8.90 for one tee, but it's hard to grasp at $15 for one tee) or even the 1-3 week shipping when I already have something to wear :).
brunonery
brunonery on Aug 23 '08 at 5:40pm
radiostaticstar, I already asked them. But as you know, customer service doesn't work on weekends - and it's a nice topic to discuss. Nobody should continue buying without knowing that shipping prices have gone up that fast!

but besides that; might be gas prices, or it might be charlie festa using the money to develop a new hair tonic that would make his beard even more epic

brunonery
brunonery on Aug 23 '08 at 5:50pm
I asked Harper and he didn't know, so I think that it's not Festa using the money - if it is, he has the secret well garded.

The gas price is a good candidate, but a 70% rise? Please tell me you're not going that bad in the USA. :o
wearecareful
wearecareful on Aug 23 '08 at 11:43pm
it's based on weight and always has been.

I live in the European Union (Portugal), and my first order (Jul 29 2008, 1 t-shirt, 5-10 days) shipping was priced at $8.90. My second order (Aug 8 2008, 5 t-shirts, 5-10 days) shipping was priced at $15.50. Next order (Aug 12 2008, 1 t-shirt, 5-10 days) shipping was priced at $9.50.

your first order of 1 shirt would have fallen into the one pound margin and your second order of 5 shirts would have fallen into the 2lb margin. The shipping services that we use round up to the nearest pound.

And yes ...gas prices are affecting everything (International Packages Shipped by Air especially) and that could be why you may see a very small increase on your 1 pound items.

The new fast method ran into a few snags in certain countries but some countries still have the option. We are working hard on solutions so that it is not only fast with tracking but also affordable.

There has not been a 70% rise in shipping :)

What used to cost $6.43 via economy for one shirt to Australia, now costs $11.00. I don't see this as a very small increase?

As s2.jen.s2 said, $6.43 to $11 isn't a very small increase. And as I said, $8.90 to $15 isn't a small increase - it's almost 70%, for God's sake! How do you explain that, wearecareful?
brunonery
brunonery on Aug 24 '08 at 6:34am
Don't you think $6.43 to $11 is a big increase, Jebbie? 71% it is - in less than a month. Do you think it's normal? Oh, Jebbie, you make me feel smart.
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Aug 24 '08 at 7:08am
You're a moron. It's already been explained. Your first order was one shirt. Your next order was 5 times as big. That's why it cost more. You need to look at your next order of only one shirt. So as ofthecoast has already pointed out your shipping has actually only increased by less than a dollar. Jebbie is a lot smarter than you.
radiostaticstar
radiostaticstar on Aug 24 '08 at 8:51am
ya know,

based upon the cost for shipping on Aug 12 2008, for 1 shirt,

had you ordered the previous 5 tees individually,

shipping would have cost you 47.50.

so i'd say, 15.50 sounds like a steal.

as for the thriftee shipping,

i wonder if that may have been an error.

5.50, i agree, seems to be quite an increase for compensating for rising costs.

just remember,

like wearecareful said earlier, it's all based on weight.

so any increase would likely be that of the shipping company.

and,

what jebbie said.

except for all that "i live in australia", etc, etc...

squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Aug 24 '08 at 8:55am
Also, the Australian dollar is worth 86 US cents, whereas a Euro is worth US$1.47 so Bruno is getting a heaps better exchange rate.

Not to mention, his shirts don't have nearly as far to go to get to him as they do to come to us. So not only is it cheaper to send them to Portugal because of the exchange rate and also because of the shorter distance travelled, it's quicker too!

And on top of that, Threadless is negotiating a European distribution centre to speed up deliveries to Europe!

We have it so terrible in this country I'm surprised I've never bothered to make a blog in which I piss and moan every time the cost of shipping a package fifteen thousand kilometres goes up by a couple of bucks.
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Aug 24 '08 at 8:59am
Also, Bruno is wearing 5 tees from the $5 sale in his gallery pics.

Seriously, that's what? 3 Euros? Are you really worried about that coming in under the 22 Euro customs limit. And are you really worried about having to pay the 20% VAT on that if it doesn't?

If you don't want to have to pay for shipping to Europe. Buy your t-shirts in Europe. They should only cost you about 30 Euros. But think of the savings on shipping!
