So, an experimenter comes up to you and presents his proposal:

Allow me to torture you for 24 hours straight...the worst torture imaginable; physical and emotional pain of the highest magnitude.

But, after the torture, your memory of the past day is completely erased. Along with this, there are no other lasting effects of the event. No physical damage/no scars/no memories/etc.etc.

For participation in this experiment, you will get $1,000,000.

Do you take up the offer?

Personally, I wouldn't know what the fuck to do with 1 million dollars even if somebody just gave it to me for free, without the torture. That much money makes people miserable in and of itself.

that's true...
how about they offer you job security, upper middle-class financial stability, and a nice home with manageable mortgage.
how about then?

i'd probably do it. it'd really help right now.

bengineer on Nov 03 '09 at 7:45pm
that's all achievable without torture :P i could only be happy with earned money/goods and getting somethig through being tortured (which i wouldn't let anyone for money, maybe to save the lives of my family or something like that) doesn't count as earned for me.

I probably wouldn't willingly get tortured for something I already have, more or less :)

Wow that is a HARD question to answer..
I'm inclined towards yes, but then I have no true concept of what the worst torture imaginable would be like, so I have no clue. That one day may feel like a million years.

although, 24 hours straight is pretty crazy. i could deal with a few hours.
bengineer

besides: i couldn't live with 24 hours of my memory erased. it'd haunt me and i'd spend all the money on trying to find out what he did to me.

does that involve a snickers bar and goose feathers?
B 7
   B 7 on Nov 03 '09 at 7:49pm
Actually, a definite no
Money, even that much, does not bring any kind of lasting happines, therefore, it could never be a fair opposite to ultimate emotional torture alone, let alone the physical too.

There are no memories, no evidence left over at all.

would you be aware that you had ever been tortured in the first place? would you just wake up in your bed and think you slept through an entire day?

Who on earth would offer this crazy-assed deal anyway? - what would they have to gain?

i think i'd kind of owe it to my family to man up and do it. it wouldn't be that bad since it gets wiped from your memory anyway.
Jellyes
Jellyes on Nov 03 '09 at 7:53pm
I think I'd go with it. We don't really care about the REAL past, anyway...we just care about what we remember.

If someone punches you, you're clearly not going to like it. If someone punches you while you're sleeping and you don't wake, you won't have knowledge of it and don't care about it because you can't care about it. If someone punched you 10 years ago and it really hurt, you cared then...but now you've forgotten and can't care now.

...I'd definitely take the deal.

yes!

i would most certainly go through 24 hours of torture if it meant i would have the means to help people who have suffered all of their lives :)

I would think being punched in the face wouldn't really compare to the most unimaginable torture you can possibly inflict on a human being.

So the worst shit imaginable? Like breaking every single finger, shattering kneecaps, eating dog shit out of a public urinal, papercuts to the penis hole, all of that and more?

I'd do it but I am positive that I wouldn't be able to.
SuperRyan
SuperRyan on Nov 03 '09 at 8:01pm
would you let a wealthy sadist suck your balls for $50?
Jellyes
Jellyes on Nov 03 '09 at 8:01pm
the point of that thought was not to compare the level of torture, but the impossibility of 'caring' about something you've forgotten.
in the same way, i could have said someone did something you liked at the time...e.g. gave you some ice-cream. but if you forget, the act has no lasting impact. you've forgotten it!

on that same note, the petty details of the experiment are irrelevant...the point is the conflicting motivation.
For most, I thought a million bucks would be what they 'want.' If that isn't what you want, substitute whatever you want in there and ask yourself the question.

If it were guaranteed that I'd actually survive. 24hrs of the worst imaginable torture would most likely kill you.

However, if it were guaranteed that I'd live, of course I'd do it.

Basically, I'm willing to endure any physical/emotional pain as long as the price is right. I mean, if it has no long term effects, then why not?

"I'd much rather the emotional torture than the physical torture."

I may be naive to think this, but is it really possible to torture some one, emotionally for 24 hours? I mean, if I knew that you were just trying to get at me and break me down; I think I would be able to shut you out for that period of time. I've never had to test this, of course. Maybe I wouldn't be strong enough.
