What is the correct way to design something that would use the simulated cmyk process? Does the 8 color rule apply?

For example, see how this looks like watercolor?
Example

I'd like to do something similar to that, but I don't want to get rejected for using more than 8 colors.

I don't know if that makes sense...

Simulated process = all the colors in the universe

that is a good example of a simulated process print

the 8 color rule does not apply to simulated process

Cool. So, can you make the design bigger if it is simulated process as well. For example, this awesome design looks like it's taller than 20"...

if you're working in raster make sure it is 300 dpi at the actual printing size (probably at least 16" x 20").

like for 'snake oil tanker' (which is amazing btw), the artist probably created the file at a high enough resolution so that threadless could print the design at whatever their maximum printing capablilites are

as long as you create the file at a high enough resolution, the printer takes care of the rest

oops, lol and 'Snake Oil Tanker' is an Alkaline Trio song,

I meant 'Snake Oil Science'

Great! Thanks for the feedback. So, process shirts are probably more expensive though, right?

Yes, so if you're going to make a simulated process design make it worth it, I've seen designs that resort to it just because they use 1-2 extra colors but could easily been reduced to eight.

I think they all need simulated process.

Yeah, those are all great. Thx for the info!

It's not usually done in 4 color CMYK. They go by the art. It can range from 3 to 12 colors. They need white whenever it's on a dark tee. There's a terrific 6 color example on black below. Roll over the colors to see how it works. There's a white tee sample at the bottom of the black one.
