north american wildlife advice please

so...
skunks.

how skittish are they?

i'm loving that my new canadian abode has these - plus raccoons and black squirrels - cavorting around the back yard my room opens onto. but i'm a bit paranoid of stepping outside and startling the skunk that lives underneath.

still trying to work out if he has bad dreams or what, as once in a while a little whiff drifts in. that's fine 'n' all, but would rather not get a direct hit of it.

ps - raccoons are full of win.

Just keep your distance. They should give you plenty of warning before they spray. The straight up and/or quivering tail is the first sign of annoyance, and sometimes they'll even do a handstand with their hind legs in the air to really show you their tail.

I don't know if they mark territory with a bit of musk, (or at least the stinky kind), but it's possible.

most folks only have 'the one time i ran over one in my car it was baaad' stories.

just hoping for pointers other than those.

they're much smaller than i expected too!

oh jeez - from that vid "if they get suddenly startled they'll just blast off a cloud."

plus they can spray up to 50ft away... that's beyond the garden fence and off yonder...

they eat cockroaches. sweet - would rather not meet them here.
