I think mine would have to be Kurt Vile's 'Smoke Ring for my Halo'. It's not instant - very much a slow-burner and not exactly ground breaking but it's a fantastic record all the same. I got to see him in Oakland as well supporting Thruston Moore in July - amazing gig.

UPDATE! I've just started a competition via my blog to win a cack-handed illustration of your favourite album of 2011 by me! Click here for more info!

Other notable mentions to Fucked Up, Will Oldham and Fleet Foxes.

Best compilation is Finders Keepers second collection of Pakistani dance-floor belters 'Life id Dance'.

And best record I got this year even though it came out years ago would be Scott Walker's 'Scott 4'.

How about you?

I suppose I should squeeze in best film too - either 'Beats, Rhymes and Life' or 'Submarine'.

Man, I didn't really listen to much new music this year. Hurry Up, We're Dreaming was nice. I liked The Year of Hibernation for a bit, too.

I guess my two favorites were

and

I don't really see The Rip Tide sticking with me though.

Mine are by bands I'll probably always like, no matter what the album contains:

It definitely feels different, but it also feels so familiar. It's hard to really describe.

I forgot what came out this year. Helplessness Blues is up there, I saw them with my Dad and we were both blown away. Explosions in the Sky & Mogwai are great too. Also Josh T Pearson's was heartbreakingly beautiful. I know I'm going to love the new Tom Waits, just haven't got round to it yet.
The new Arctic Monkeys was okay, but the title song Suck it and See, I loved it. Radiohead get an honourable mention, but it was a bit short. I think James Blake will be on a lot of lists, I just can't get into it, seems a bit sterile. I've also been enjoying Mirror Traffic by Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, and more recently Wye Oak.

(I had to flick through the old music library to see what I recently added, so there are probably more that I just forgot)

Wow you dudes have some awesome music taste. Here are my top 5, I would post the covers but I'm on my phone:

1. Bon Iver - Bon Iver
2. Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
3. Beirut - the rip tide
4. Youth Lagoon - Youth Lagoon
5. Mute Math - Odd Soul (mostly because it reminds me of the black keys)

Speaking of the black keys, I'm sooooo pumped for their new album. It will probably replace mute math on my list. I didn't care for brothers, but this one sounds like older black keys so far :)

I honestly don't recall a record that came out in 2k11 that I insanely enjoyed or thought was something groundbreaking.

But I haven't listened to the new m83 album yet which i have heard is mindblowing...

I'll check the 2011 year released tab on my iTunes when i get home :)

The Antler's "Burst Apart" has been my most heavily listened to album of this year. I don't even know who to express how much I love it - it's up there with my favorite albums of all time, not just 2011.

Jame Blake's self-titled has also been a favorite of this year

As well as Washed Out's new one

And "21" too. This album really resonated with me this year and was pretty much the perfect one to listen to when I needed a good cry.

I've also really loved "Rip Tide" and "Helplessness Blues" and "Bon Iver." And I am eagerly anticipating "El Camino," Dan Auerbach could sing me the phone book and I'd still swoon.

That other 2011 album blog got me to keep track of music. Tune yards and fucked up's albums are both really fun listens, I second George and Jonathan. Those are the three I remember liking a lot.
1. Tune-yards
2. George and Jonathan
3. Fucked Up
I still haven't listened to a lot of music this year.

Bon Iver is on my Christmas list. I really liked his first album (eventually) but heard the new one was very restrained so avoided.

Evan - I know what you mean about nothing ground-breaking. I feel like the stuff I did like is all fairly derivative, safe and unoriginal.

Great list. I've got check some these.

Really like Youth Lagoon but the way he pronounces the S's always remind of Herbert that pedophile from Family Guy.

In no particular order
Clams Casino-Instrumental Mixtape

I think really paving ways for hip-hop producers to make their own music and remixes, not just tracks for rappers

Ford & Lopatin- Channel Pressure

Pretty great melodies and influence from early video game days

M83-Hurry up we're dreaming

Finally launching them onto the well deserved platform he/they should be on, even though Saturdays = Youth is still my favorite album by him/them

Class Actress - Rapproacher

2 words: Analog synths. Gotta love em.

I'm sure I'll be back with more, but those are the few off the top of my head I can think of.

I think this kid deserves a lot of credit for creating his sounds and beats and really working on his vocals since his last release.
