The term 'red indian' is derogatory. The shirts logo, though very stylized, is still the same as any other sports team logo that , and I as a Native American think its wrong to do. I want to share my opinion because I want people to know that this shouldn't be acceptable. It's sucks because I've gotten some awesome shirts and a sweatshirts from this company.

I have to agree with m1ster w1zard here. This shirt is pretty tasteless and offensive, in my opinion.

I dont think 'tasteless' is in the Threadless vocabulary. This is really a cool execution and happy to see it's been printed on the side placement ! Will get one for sure.

I completely understand where those comments are coming from. Addu is obviously ignorant of cultural studies (esp Native American), and I do not expect to see anyone, with a considerable amount of Native American blood in them, to not express their opinion on this design.

Is anyone employed at threadless have a considerable portion of Native American / Hawaiian blood in them (anthropology / cultural studies background). Otherwise, as far as I know, threadless does not really know better.

On the other hand, I think the Art is Awesome : )

Hey man!

I love the shirt and will be sure to buy one very soon (this week sometime). I am American Red Indian and I do not take any offence to said term: Indian.

I pride myself on being an Indian.

The design is awesome and I would gladly wear this every where.
sillyputty
sillyputty on May 24 '10 at 4:28pm
Yeah, this is the first Threadless shirt I've ever seen that I would not wear on the basis of how uncomfortable it makes me feel. In addition to "red Indian" being somewhat of a racist term, this design definitely calls to mind racist stereotypes of Native Americans as being "warring savages."
Also, screw Avatar. That movie was nothing more than a racist, white guilt fantasy and totally played right into the noble savage stereotype.
isawa
isawa on May 24 '10 at 4:40pm
For your knowledge Mikerroni, The word Indian is not at offense here. The term "Red" describing Indian is. Some American Indians do not find it offensive and some do. For the most part, other than sports teams, Red Indian, Redskins (original Indian scalp), and Red (meaning Indian), are never used. In fact, many sports teams have dropped such names. If one examines the case against the Washington Redskins, one will see that the case was dropped only because the lawsuit was filed too late, even though the term was determined to be "a disparaging racial epithet"

I have never heard of anyone referring to themselves as "American Red Indian" lol perhaps Native American, American Indian, simply Indian (which is confusing with the country of India), whatever the the name for themselves in their native tongue is, or the Anglo tribe word for them, eg: Cherokee.

Well first off to the artist you did an awesome job. The style is amazing and well executed. The color shirt makes the black ink and style pop perfectly. As soon as I get some cash together im going to buy one.

To people who are offended by the shirt, get over it. The guy made a red (shirt) indian (design) and called it red indian. Yes indian is part of my nationality and I took no offense to this shirt because the artist is simply expressing art, and in no way is this shirt promoting racism or hate.
FRICKINAWESOME
   FRICKINAWESOME on May 24 '10 at 7:13pm
I thought that the "red" part of the red indian was in reference to the color shirt it weas printed on, not referencing the indian's color as red.

I kinda think people are just being waaay oversensitive to the title that Anwar meant no offense with, because i don't think anyone is having a problem with the shirt design itself from what i've read.

Besides all that, this looks amazing on the tee, incredible placement oer the sleeve print, congrats man!

Phauxe n FA: seriously this all what I had on my mind when I started designing this piece. I do checked the title from Wiki too
and I'm not surprised if it's gonna be issue bout races n stuffs.
I'm seriously not blaming for all the words n I'm far way to insult others too-honestly this is just an artpiece-hope u guys appreciated that:) I do respect Threadless's decision as well cos they know the BEST!:)

I bought this, and I understand that that you had no ill intention whatsoever, it was a red tee design, like the bull, and that is how the name was created.

I under stand the shirt is a part of your "red" series. I think the design is awesome (it does kinda look like hes being shot in the head but w/e). My point was the name, period. No disrespect to the artist at all. Much respect due to HAHA.sg and threadless for being so understanding. I don't want to comment about the people saying their native and saying they like being called red indians (time start to reading some better books maybe). It's an artist concept, and I appreciate the art. The headdress nor the adornment around the neck and head band aren't from any tribe in north central or south america. That's another reason this isn't I'm not harping on it.

The name is derogatory, (nobody I know calls them selves a red indian, cause we're not red, no matter how many disney cartoons you've seen) I couldn't "get over it", because this is an issue almost exclusive to the indigenous population of this continent, and it deserves to be brought to light. Threadless and the designer did something NO other company would do without being forced to, and did with swift conviction. This is how people should act, take an argument into consideration and reach a compromise (cause even I know threadless couldn't drop a sweet design like that after they put the ad time into it). It should be applauded, commended, and it should be a shining example for every company or sports team.

I just wish this shirt came in a 3xl;)

obluebabyo on May 25 '10 at 9:37pm
Artistically, it looks really cool. Unfortunately to my eye, it looks like someone just cut off his head because of the blood splattering behind the lower part of his head.

I wish there was a portion of his shoulder showing or something, although I believe it would take away from the graphic. Otherwise it just reminds me of scalping days.

Sorry to criticize for something you had no intention of conveying, but it's kind of ignorant IMHO.

Originally I raised an eyebrow over the title although of course I knew Anwar didn't mean any disrespect. However I'm glad Threadless changed it, sounds cooler anyway!

Anyway, congrats dude, awesome design and placement! This and "Revenge of the Toro" are my favourites of yours. :)

Your movie choices are poor. Apocalypto used proper language but the content was not proper (what Mel chose to focus on was negative and probably inaccurate). Avatar was a pipe-dream fantasy.. at least with Dances with Wolves it was about real people and places (even though it still has the mighty-whitey syndrome). There are no big-budget Hollywood movies that get Native culture 'right', none that I know of anyway. You could watch Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner) but you still won't learn what it's like to be Native.

The art does remind me of the Redskins logo... but a little bit worse since the man looks like he's mid-war cry. Did all warriors wear a heavy feather headdress and then run into battle?! I'm glad that threadless changed the title.
