SnakeMan
SnakeMan on Jul 16 '08 at 8:39pm
impossible question.

i don't know about being the best foreign flick, but kung fu hustle was the best asian gangster/western/comedy/superhero/kung fu/romance i ever saw.
SnakeMan
SnakeMan on Jul 16 '08 at 8:39pm
again, not the best, but oldboy was craaaaazy.

Seventh Seal, Afterlife, Mind Game, Spirited Away, Aguirre Wrath of God, Fallen Angels, Delicatessen, Cat Soup, Dreams, Shanghai Triad, Paprika, the Decalogue, Nobody Knows.

+ many more. Big fan of asian cinema + animation. Mind Game being my favourite and also one of the best movies ever made.

Anything Studio 4 degrees animates is beautiful.

stefakn on Jul 16 '08 at 8:44pm
Also, SnakeMan, check out Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. It's in a spiritual trilogy with "OldBoy", and it's almost as good, but twice as clever. It's a Shakespearean comedy of errors. Except very, very, dark.

The whole movie is like that, continual experimentation with different styles of animation. And it hasn't been released on DVD here, so you shouldn't feel any qualms about downloading it:

It's honestly the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, especially the ending. You really should get it.

I love Amelie, but mostly what I wanted to say is that I neeeeed to see Un Chien Andalou.
Also, Lola Rennt has a pretty badass soundtrack.

Run Lola Run is probably the most important piece of foreign cinema on your list, as far as paving the way for movies like memento and quentin tarintino style story telling.

Oldboy is one of my favorite foreign flicks.

of the three colours series, i really love three colours blue.
the edukators seems to wake me up.
hell yeah to spirited away and amelie.

and my favourite ending of all time would be with jean de florette/manon des sources (utterly gut-wrenchingly in the most quiet of ways).

there are more, but they evade me at this hour...

Run Lola Run is probably the most important piece of foreign cinema on your list, as far as paving the way for movies like memento and quentin tarintino style story telling.

Tom Tykwer made Wintersleepers before Run Lola Run. This movie also has a different way of story telling and is even better than Lola Rennt in my opinion.

And what do you like about Oldboy? I thought it was terrible and could barely watch it until the terrible plot.

I second "The Magdalene Sisters" and I'd also add "My Summer of Love" and "Ratcatcher"

Ricki-Oh:The Story of Ricky is my number 1 foreign recommendation. Brotherhood is the best war film Ive ever seen.

Save the Green Planet was unusual, and anyone who enjoys stranger asian cinema would enjoy 'Happiness of the Katakuris'.

Also 'Tears of the Black Tiger' is one of the most beautiful films Ive ever seen & I think lots of people here would love it.

this blog has reminded me it has been a fucking long time since I have watched a foreign film.

I was a fan of Run Lola Run however.

I also watched and enjoyed "Prisoner of the Mountains"

All but American films are shit, so you shouldn't watch any madd.
13strong
13strong on Jul 17 '08 at 5:23am
All American films are foreign, for me, so to pick one would be a little difficult. And then there's all the non-British films, too.

This is a hard question.

Ikiru, The Bicycle Thief, La Belle et la Bete, L'Eclisse, lots of others but i'm late for work

I know it sounds strange considering that I'm a brit but I dont really consider american films to be forign films we see more of them than we do brit films.

Its got to the point where brit films are the outsiders and almost forign.

Withnail and I is one of my favourites.

Good Morning Night, Cinema Paradiso, La Dolce Vita, Bicycle Thieves, La Femme Nikita, Life is Beautiful, The Spanish Apartment and Russian Dolls (the sequel), Zozo, Seven Samurai, The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, Nosferatu (old German silent B&W, Dr Caligari is the textbook example of expressionism), The Consequences of Love, Bread and Tulips (mostly I just like the Venetian scenery in that)
13strong
13strong on Jul 17 '08 at 5:55am
If we're talking non-American films, my favourites are:

Last Night (Canada)
Lady Vengeance (Korea)
Persepolis (France/Iran)
Princes Mononoko (Japan)
All About My Mother (Spain)
Fitzcarraldo (Germany)

Oh, and so many others. I'm sure I'm missing some great European stuff. Loads of great Almodovar stuff, good films by Werner Herzog, some good stuff, like Stalker, by Tartakovsky...

Best British films, IMO, are:

Small Faces (Scotland)
Ratcatcher (Scotland)
Trainspotting (Scotland)
Local Hero (Scotland)
Don't Look Now (England)
If... (England)
The Ladykillers (England)
Monty Python's Life of Brian (England)
A Fish Called Wanda (England)
Secrets and Lies (England)
This is England (England)
Clockwork Orange (England, kinda)

Oh, and you all have to watch "M", which is an incredible film starring a young, German-speaking Pete Lorre.
