Hey One & All,

Just seeing what the deal is with voting. Sometimes I see designs getting oodles of votes and other designs only getting a few votes. Irrespective of quality. There's some solid designs out there getting only a few hundred votes while some very average and uncreative work is getting two or three times that.

Is there something I'm missing?

Yes, I know successful designs will automatically gain popularity, but, if you look around at past votes you won't have to look hard to find designs with a low final score that have been voted on many more times than others?

Do you have to be with the "in-crowd" here? Do I need to blog heaps, comment stacks or earn some sort of reputation before the work I do good enough to vote for.

I guess all I'm saying is I find it a little frustrating, and, at the end of the day are designs actually getting voted on how good they are?

Feel free to comment, because this has been buggin me.

you just need a good design, good designs will get more votes because many people don't vote on what they don't like.

the idea of being popular gets you votes is BS

it is all based on the quality of the work

I understand the impression though

comments will increase with people knowing you and looking out for your work - but this is only a teeny tiny fraction of the voting block - you would have to have many many hundreds of pals voting you up in order to effect the score

Yeah. I see what you're saying.

I just feel that a lot of artist whose work I really admire on this site have very under-rated. There's some shirts that I would really like to see printed who end up with a final score of just over 2. And a whole pile of 'cute', unorigional pics of panda's or badly drawn manga that push out scores of 3 or 4.

Artists like...

Torakamikaze
Raid71
sonmi
franx
Jemae

The amount of votes also fluctuates a lot, I'm guessing it depnds on how many active users there are at a certain time. Most designs that don't get dropped have a similar amount of votes if they're up for scoring simultaneously.

which designs are getting 3's and 4's that shouldn't as of late? i haven't seen any.

raid71 has 10 prints..
sonmi has 7
franx has 6
jemae has 4

not saying they dont deserve more, im just not sure what you are saying.
tora and jean warhol are however certainly due for prints

ditto on tora and jean warhol

i expect one from them every week

and a number of other unprinted

but - cameron,

few of the high scoring "cute" designs really get printed, they represent a portion of the weekly run

and just like in the voting - people click for cute, especially with their wallet - threadless is a business to make money - but they are also built on the idea of artists having a platform and network while also offering an amazingly huge prize

and you cannot deny that all of the shirts printed have a high intrinsic artistic value, even the cute ones, I would argue that threadless is a really remarkable thing - it has given the amateur and professional artist the ability to actually make something that can be shared across the globe - and get killer bounty from it

also, as danielle commented - the artists you named have plenty of prints - although I am certainly dumbfounded that some work gets voted low - wullagaru comes to mind - but naming names is so hard cause there are so many - but LOW scores sometimes get printed, lots of times - and there are stacks of 3+ that never got printed, so even accomplishing that (although incredibly amazingly awesome) is no guarantee that you will get a print

My final grand point is this... personally I am not here determined to get a print and frustrated with it not happening - I think it was after sub 3 or 4 that I realized just how much I liked drawing regularly with purpose - and i met some good people here - pretty much everyone rules, total lovefest - and I like to make imaginary t-shirts

but I am an old dude and everybody has their own opinion

sorry for offensively long rant
mind as well take it too far

Nah dude, long rants are cool. I guess it's just practice for when you go senior citizen and have some kids playing on your front lawn.

Threadless is cool on all accounts. I just found it frustrating that there's good artist here whose final scores don't in any way reflect their talent. I thought that perhaps, like a lot of things out there, that people's connections made sure they got seen and scored more than others. But in retrospect, there's gotta be a decent system involved because Threadless is very successful.

In fact I do feel kinda silly now. Good that I got that outta my system though. Maybe I'm still getting used to the idea of people judging mine and others work in such an open forum.

Really appreciate all feedback by the way.

Bear in mind that a high final score doesn't necessarily equal a print. As Isa said there are heaps of designs in the high twos and low threes that will never get printed and I can think of two examples of shirts that got printed having scored less than one.

Wha?! Less than 1, really?

I just checked the designs in question and I was wrong, they scored 1.17 and 1.76 so they weren't below one but they were well below two and still got printed.

There was another one that got printed at about 1.2 but I can't remember what it was called at the moment.

The 1.76 is Jzef's print right? I have no clue what the other ones are.

Neon Monkey was printed with a score of 1.17, as far as I know it's the lowest scoring print.

Hi was printed with a score of 1.76.

The second lowest scoring print that I'm aware of was called "Sadness" or "Sorrow" or some other single word depressing name. It had a dead bird on it and was printed with a score of 1.2 or something.

ISABOA continue's to earn huge amounts of respect from me.

I'm one of the many people who only vote on things they like. I'm not an artist, and I don't feel like I should judge people who are? I don't know. I give fours and fives, and zeros for theft, and skip all the others.

Thanks, I'm a total Noob and I was observing the same, you cats chilled me out pretty good, I actually really enjoyed that dead bird print (if you lookit my profile you can probably see why-blush) but with some of these folks who put out something great and didn't get selected, the "solve for x" mech in my brain was really wondering, I also do kinda aesthetically disagree with some prints, but maybe they understand something fiscally I don't.
Anyways, I think every Noob should read this for a little perspective.
so hows that for a rant!

You leave a blog for a couple of days and look what happens...

Anyway, I tend to now score like WarDrobeInSpareOom, I'd rather give a high score for someone who has done well and then just simply skip others who's work I don't particulary like.

But I am harsh on theft or blatant lazy ideas that don't don't seem to be parody.

I don't know if anyone saw the blatant rip of Bankzy a couple of weeks ago. The guy who did it was a bit weird.

I want to second what ISABOA said at the end of his rant...at first I was a bit bummed by getting low scores, but then I realized how much fun I was having just making the designs. Since I started threadless I have been drawing more in my free time than I have in years. Even if I never get a print, I am learning a lot about design, and enjoying myself, so its still time well spent in my book.
