Hi guys! I sincerely apologize if a topic like this exists already, but for a long time I wanted to collect and post my own tips about how to increase your presence in the internet. Some of the tips might seem obvious, but I thought I’d post all I know (which doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m good at it) – but I definitely want to hear your experience as well:

Personalized tools:

- Your own website (make it very easy to handle for users, clear, update it weekly with your best work, don’t post stuff you didn’t enjoy to draw and are not satisfy with, make the name of the website easy to spell and understand – make it VERY EASY to find the contact information)

- Newsletter: I got some people to sign up for newsletter at the Comicfestival in New York, but to be quite honest, as long as you’re not ready to write a good, interesting newsletter every 2 weeks or so you shouldn’t get people to sign up for it (like me – I plan to make some changes here). ALWAYS offer the option to unsubscribe clearly in the mail.

- Blog: Use a blog to write about your work, make the posts entertaining to read and sometimes share advice and tips on how to do stuff (making-offs). Comment on other blogs, don’t just expect people to follow you without following them in return

- Face book fanpage: gaining fans is not so easy for me. I gain most fans trough having a shirt sold somewhere. Keep up the interaction with fans by posting work, asking for feedback, offering free shirts from time to time, etc
.
- Twitter: I suck at twittering!!! Nothing to say here yet.

- Tumblr - a lot of people here have good experiences with it because it enables users to re-blog fast end easy. collection of threadless artists on tumblr

Online Portfolio sites – I use or know:

- Deviantart – I refused to use it for a long time and I still don’t have a clear opinion about it. There is a lot of crap there, naturally, but also so much good stuff. Countless fantastic artists contribute everyday and it becomes easier and easier to find them once you start. For me, deviantart is not only a self promo tool but a place to see good art (avoid the crappy art). To get “Watchers” on deviantart, you have to invest some time – post fan art in groups, comment on other people’s stuff, contribute regularly. I DON’t use the option for art prints, since I am doing that on society 6.

- Society 6 – I have not really dealt with it enough yet – I like a lot of the art I see there. I don’t earn much money with it yet and I don’t get a lot of exposure, but I guess that’s mainly because I haven’t invested much time in it yet.

- Behance, gawker, etc.: I have not dealt enough yet with the free portfolio sites, nor have I invested in a portfolio site that charges….a project for the future.

Message boards:

- Threadless community: I know I should post more there, definitely need to invest more time in the future. A lot of community members offer valuable advice and feedback. It pays off to be active at the Threadless community.

- Look for Message boards related to the topics you make designs for – I am active in some pretty nerdy message boards, like nerdnyc.com and the Bruce Campbell Society because I make very nerdy designs.

Over-all tips:

Give and take – online networking is not just about silently spitting out one design after another, it’s very much about interaction and reaction. Comment on other stuff, try to really give honest and useful feedback, don’t be a douche – internet is the best place for misunderstandings, so express yourself clearly and try to not take anything to serious. Internet-Shit Storms are funny, but also embarrassing for the participants ;-)

I need to improve a lot in a lot of the stuff I posted myself….my future project.

PLEASE share all your knowledge here!

Nice post! I have no knowledge upon the subject, just lots of bookmarks that I plan to use one day.

Tumblr seems good, it took a while before people started re-blogging my work, but when it it happens, it's nice. Although, a couple of pics were re-blogged lots, but then nobody bought any of the pics from S6. I don't feel like posting too often either.

I heard deviantart can be an issue with people just downloading your pics, so I'm not too sure about that. Plus, it has lots of fan art stuff.....

I had a go at Behance and it seems good, although I haven't published anything yet. The name reminds me of Beyonce a little too much though....will have to post some stuff there soon.

I guess it's not really nice to promote your own work, but unless you're really big, the only person who is going to do it is you. I should do a Facebook page one day, although I quit regular FB...

a blog would be a good idea! my only other thought would be just to join more tee shirt sites....

At devaintart you can change the setting and people can't download - you can even put a watermark on the artwork, or just upload it small enough so that people can't really use it if they downloaded it.
Need to check tumblr.

Boycey on Aug 30 '11 at 8:08am
Oh cool, I might try it at a later date. You should do tumblr, people will be re-blogging your lovely pics all the time.. Maybe put your name/logo on it though because when it's re-blogged, it can be taken away from the original links that you provide.

Love your work btw, big fan of your stuff.

Thanks for the post. I use blogger for a
Portfolio Blog
and a
Traditional Blog

I like that it is free and easy. If you want people read regularly it is a give and take as you say. It is also good to post weekly. Adding tags to your posts is also very important if you want your art to get exposure. Add-ons like Feedjit are great for knowing if and who might be looking at your work.

Isn't Tumblr just another blog type? For exposure I think having a blog that is regularly updated is more important than having multiple blogs. I may be wrong here.

I have know idea how Tweeting works for designers and illustrators. Some people say it works well but I don't really get it.

Thanks so much for these great idea of posting your experiences with the presence in the wwweb.
I'm a fan of flickr as well. But I think at least it is not a great difference to the other internet presentations. Does it really make sense to use tumblr and a blog with the same themes and a facebookpage and a website? I don't know but I want to have all of them, but how are your experiences with that?
biotwist
   biotwist on Aug 30 '11 at 10:34am
I don't bother with my blog any more except for really big news.
if you dont have tumblr you are denying people the chance to easily reblog your stuff. there are some really informative tumblr blogs on this site if you search.
I dont mess with behance but both Rebubble and flickr have awesome groups you can submite you stuff to besides just having it on the site to increase your awarenss

@Boycey thanks so much for the nice words! And keep the submissions going! :-D

I really am getting interested in tumblr more and more hahaha. That's on my to do list. I added it to the list. Tumblr is really orientated towards pictures only, right? Or almost no text....
biotwist
   biotwist on Aug 30 '11 at 10:55am
a lot more photos then text, and lots of tags and links, plus a "loves" system like facebooks like. you can easly post photo by uploading the file or just providing the URL, it has a lot of other handy features too. I highly recommend it

this is really, really great advice! I think that actively getting involved in twitter is also a really great way to get your stuff out there, as your design link is going out to potentially hundreds of people's phones immediately.

I really want to get a tumblr though, that sounds like a brilliant idea!

everything you said!!!
tumblr is awesomesauce. you can link it to not only twitter, but your FB fanpage/personal fanpage or BOTH as well. you can also find TONS of blogs to sub your stuff to with millions of followers that will reblog your stuff (i.e justin rampage/ shirtoid)

ther is also reddit, but i am just starting to try to wrap my head around that. i do know that alot of people have found quite a bit of success with it.

Thanks Queenmob. I use flickr and facebook. I have not really seen a marked increase in scoring or votes by using these but at least it gets my stuff out there for the masses to see.

Watching this blog for sure!!

yes, you should try tumblr, you'd gain a lot of followers with it cuz people (followers or not) would keep on reblogging your post all over the web, just don't forget to put your tumblr account(e.g., queenmob.tumblr.com) on your every post so they can easily follow you back.

great stuff here by the way! if we're on tumblr i'd reblog this! :)
