do you have a scanner?
if so, think up an idea, draw it up and that should be your first step, especially if you don't know how to work the program.

yes you can do that if you specify that it will need 'simulated process' printing technique.

how do i actually use the template because i swear there must be something in there that i'm not getting..

i don't think it's that important to use the template anymore. if you look at most people's presentations they've used photos of people wearing tshirts and just super-impose your design on it etc. as long as it's the right dimensions i don't think it a problem if you don't use the template
