I'm currently doing a painting of Little Red Riding Hood, and I decided maybe it'd be fun to take pictures at various stages of completion. Actually it's a pain in the ass rather than fun, but maybe the RESULTS will be fun! Anyway, here are some process pics-- I'll post the finish when it's, uh, finished!

My sketch on shitty paper-- generally I just draw until something cool comes out and think up a concept later. I wanted to make sure the wolf looked pretty demented and Red pretty skeptical.

Inked with Microns-- my nib pens tend to stick into the Arches Coldpress. For areas that need colored outlines I wait until the end, since my colored pens are not waterproof.

Started coloring, I mostly only use red, yellow, blue, Burnt Sienna, and Payne's Gray. Sometimes I'll mix them right on the paper which gives a look seen on Red's hood. To get the speckles on the wolf, I put salt over the paint while it is damp.

Stil painting, I've moved into the pinks and got Red's skin over with. I HATE painting skintone.

Lots of progress since the last pic. I finished the base layer of paint for everything except the bed, because it's going to be an annoying gingham pattern. Started adding cast shadows like on the wolf's belly, and also added second layers to areas like the wolf's mouth. Pulled out my awesome colored pens, as well.

All that's left is the bed and final highlights using gouache! I'll post when I'm done. OMG CLIFFHANGER.

Glad you guys like it! Photoshop isn't really my medium of choice like with the t-shirts so thought maybe I'd show some watercolor. :}

the details! there's an earwig, and granny sticking out of his bellybutton, and the fish and pickle, and the daisy!

spacesick-- it's a combo of salt and also dropping some water onto the wet paint, it's not difficult or anything, though the results can be random sometimes. :I

how long does this take you from when you started to where you are now?

Really really beautiful. I also hate painting skintone. I talked with an oil painter once about it and my cerebellum exploded. He started talking about how skin was translucent and how it reacts to light n stuff. I had no idea it could get that involved.

olie! It took me a day to ink, a couple hours I'm guessing cause the paper is not kind to pens, and then the coloring so far has taken maybe 5 or 6 hours but that's with lunch and such :} I'm just estimating though, I've never actually times myself, though that's a good idea!!
jadefrolics
jadefrolics on May 01 '08 at 3:25pm
MrDomino... yeah, skin is way more involved than you'd ever think, and if you do it wrong they look like barbies!!!!!! Since my style's cartoonish I don't worry about being too realistic, but I throw in blues around the eyes and in the shadows and greens, and it's easy to make into a natsy puddle. Have you done oil painting, or you were just chatting? I'd love to learn

The only actual painting I've done is watercolor. Everything else I do is digital, and as color is a weak spot for me I haven't been very daring in it till recently. I just did this and I'm pretty happy with it. The color is still really deficient and not very lifelike, but I finally managed to wrap my hear around defining shapes without lines. That was a big step.

MrDomino, This looks great! I love her dress. Looking at the picture it doesn't make me think at all that color is a weak spot for you :)

i really love the texture you got going in the wolf's fur!!! the whole thing is pretty amazinglygreat.

ps. what kind of watercolours do you tend to use? i've only dabbled a bit in it and i'm still using up the shitload i've had forever, cheapo reeves tubes i got at walmart when i was a kid and those dollar store kits of colour circles (+ just add water crap) and i haven't seen much difference between my colours and the expensive ones my friends have bought. i'm a pretty cheap person

pss. ewww i just spotted the earwig bug, those things totally scare me. i spotted some in my grandparents' basement once and i had to sleep down there so i slept with earphones on.
BaronVonMonkey
BaronVonMonkey on May 01 '08 at 4:43pm
Ah, reeves tubes! I didn't realise they were the cheapskate's watercolour of choice in other countries too!
ginetteginette
ginetteginette on May 01 '08 at 5:06pm
haha they totally are and i have a set of every type: gouache/acrylic/oil/watercolour
the worst part is that the little screw caps keep breaking if there's even the tiniest bit of dried up paint in it and then fall off and then my tubes dry up and i have to trash them. totally worthless.

This is absolutely beautiful - I love watercolours more than any other medium, and I love your style. Do you ever sell your paintings?
jadefrolics
jadefrolics on May 01 '08 at 5:35pm
Ginette-- I use Holbein watercolors... I couldn't really imagine using anything else but I talked to Anita Kunz a few months ago when she gave a demo and she uses these crappy little cake watercolors. You can get amazing looks with crappy watercolors, I'm just too lazy :)

Krakaboom: Thank you! I've sold a few paintings at a show, but I haven't gotten really into the whole gallery/selling thing yet. Honestly I don't know anything about business yet, but I definitely plan to build up knowledge and sell stuff. However, my work is pretty illustrative and I'm not sure how many people would want it as a fine art print on their wall. We'll see! :D

Also, I think the choice of paper is much more important than brand of watercolor... I've tried those student-grade pads of watercolor paper and it's awful. That's what we used in High School so I thought I hated watercolors until I got to college and started using Arches. Of course there are many other good brands besides arches, but any of those cheap pads of watercolor are TERRIBLE!!!!!
BaronVonMonkey
BaronVonMonkey on May 01 '08 at 5:44pm
ginette- YES! I hate those screwcaps! But I do still have a drawful of assorted Reeves tubes. Those acrylics last me about two minutes though, so I get my old high school art teacher to order me massive school tubes on the cheap instead

jade- I think people would totally buy them. Or you should make some zines or postcards or something- you'd sell zillions to threadlessers I'm sure

oil painting is amazing.
i took 1 class and i felt ashamed aobut what i was missing.

there's somethigna bout it thats makes you think real hard.
doing from dark to light, almost working backwards from waht your used to, using strong hard thing amounts of paint to imply movement or action or engery.

you ahve to try it, sees with your water color technique, it'd be a since for you

Thanks welsh! I dunno, maybe you like the lines and they get lost in the color? That's what my professor says, but I think he just hates watercolor :(
