Retroludo aka Erin is a 27.63 year old girl, has been a member since April 1, 2008, has scored 7,713 submissions, giving an average score of 2.76, helping 551 designs get printed.
So I don’t know how many people frequent the slogan part of Threadless, I spend quite a bit of time there voting and submitting. I had a few suggestions for it and thought this blog would be cool in case others had some ideas they wanted to share. So umm, here are my suggestions:

I’d like to see the voting page broken down into 2 pages, 1 page for voting on new slogans submitted that day and another page for voting on slogans that are still in the running. The reason is that there are some great older slogans that get overlooked and if someone is so inclined to vote, let them vote on new and perhaps older slogans. It’s harder for older slogans to get circulated and voted upon so if there was a way to put these back to the attention of voters that’d be awesome.

I’d also like to see a way to search through older slogans based on like a tagging system from the words so that I can know if I’m treading to close to another’s slogan. A Google search is helpful but it’s hard to search on Threadless for slogans and sometimes sloganeers come up with 2 slogans that are really similar on accident. I think a search would be helpful to avoid that.

Here are some other ideas but I realize that they are just pipe dreams:

I’d really like it if those who have a lot of slogan prints such as FRICKINAWESOME, PuppetMeat, Bio-bot 9000, martiandrivein, rossmat8, etc could choose a slogan to be printed, sort of like an alumni pick.

I’d also kind of like a random week of double slogan prints or alternating between reprints and new prints.

So yea * keeping fingers crossed* Any other thoughts or comments out there?

More ideas to add!

The ability to sort your slogan page based on date, scores, or perhaps even customizable.

An official loves competition for slogans, Brightwood's slogan swap show us that there's a lot of visual potential for slogans when pared with the right designer and with community support.

Spellchecker on the submission page would be most excellent.

Permalinks to the slogan page with active slogans is an excellent suggestion.

Ensuring no slogan is a bumper sticker or copy is always important. Personally, I think this is a little more the honor system with sloganeers but when things are about to print it's important that they are original and good to keep that in mind.

Create a way to delete multiple slogans at once!

Updated: I think Ross's blog also has some excellent points about maybe reducing the cost to $10 for typetees

Is 2 a lot? :P

Anyways, I would fully support this. I haven't been digging most of the recent slogans picks, and I think some of the slumni would have really interesting and different choices (kinda like alumni's choice, which there really should be more of!).

mmmhmmm, yes. i agree. but gawd knows how many slogans are submitted on a daily basis. i'd like to have an exclusionary search, like i type in boobs and it excludes any slogan with the word boobs in it. not really though, because i love boob slogans.

Well 2 puts the plural in prints, so why not. I think it'd be cool as long as the slumni chooses someone's work other than their own.

Laura- the constant flow of new slogans is why I think there should be a system implemented to only vote for new slogans and then vote for older ones.

I agree with everything you have said, especially the search capabilities for slogans. If you type in a slogan you likely can't find it.

As well as an alumni pick perhaps good shoppers could get to pick some too, who better to choose slogans than those who buy them.

Another thing that I'm not sure about is when does your slogan get out of regular circulation? It seems that as soon as I submit a new slogan the old one is booted, is this the case?
Retroludo
Retroludo on Apr 19 '10 at 8:57pm
I'm not sure, I think it depends on the flow of other submissions after your slogan. I've submitted at different times on my days off and sometimes it lingers on the page longer.

Search capabilties for key wordsw in slogans would be greaqt if you wanted to say vote on a ton of "zombie" slogans that day. Great suggestions, I would LOVE if the slumnis got together and were able to come up with a list of twenty or so possibilities for threadleess to print, I'm sure we could find a bunch from underappreciated stellar sloganeers who tread the line of severe cleverness but still easily understandable...or just some way awesome more meta slogans that would get some attention and hip points back into threadless's type tee line from the outside design world.

Id love a slogan/design contest much like an official version of brightwood's recent slogan swap to get even better and more creative slogan designs circulating on threadless.

Oh, and no more slogan percentage visible except to threadless and the person who made the slogan...

Keep it up erin, you deserve a place at the slumni table slogqn talks!

Yes the ability to arrange your slogan page would be most excellent- I'll add that in.

A loves slogans contest would indeed be great, there were some excellent subs that appeared during Brightwood's slogan swap so the potential is there.

Also like maybe they could add a spell check, except instead of checking for spelling errors then telling you, it just automatically deletes the slogan.
rossmat8
rossmat8 on Apr 20 '10 at 4:21pm
Actually on a more serious note, it would be interesting if once a month Threadless had a specific topic for people to write slogans about then at the end of the month, the best slogan would win. Best could be highest scoring, but that would be difficult with some of the shady scores obtained by some people *see this week's print* So I think best should be decided by staff, so really nothing would change from normal slogan printing, but it would be more of a contest rather than a massive pile of randomness.

Spellchecker would also be nice. I could see a theme once in awhile, but I think a lot of people would start subbing repetitve ideas on a regular basis. I'd much rather see a surprise double slogan print at the end of the month or building a theme into a loves contest.
rossmat8
rossmat8 on Apr 20 '10 at 5:22pm
Yeah they had a period of about 2 months where they printed 2 slogans a week, then they started doing 1 new and 1 reprint which is cool, but it's not the same.

yeah, how did "Andipandy" get printed? She is almost never on, from what I can tell. She has nearly no blog posts (the most current one is from March), and i can't find a comment or post from her. And yet most of her slogans have over 100 votes and are at least 75% ??????? Something is odd there.

frostedlemoncoward on Apr 21 '10 at 11:14am
Good suggestions so far! As I said in a different thread, I'd like the prints to alternate between two new tees one week, and one new tee + one reprint the next week. The reprinted slogans are not always better than some of the unprinted ones.
ShawnLogan
ShawnLogan on Apr 21 '10 at 11:16am
yeah, they deffinately need to mix it up a bit with the slogan tee prints. they just don't do enough of them. I wonder what the sales numbers are on slogan vs. print?

I wish we could control layout on the slogan page. Layout makes such a difference in how things are read. I hope your having fun with these little challenges and don't find them irritating. I'm just playing around.

Being able to insert carriage returns would really make a differance in how a slogan looks.

Look at these two examples:

How it appears:

Brightwood's Version:

:D and the world :D's

with you. : ( and you :

( alone.

43% like it

Solovo's Version:

:D and the world :D's

with you, but if : ( then

you : ( alone.

82% like it

I like the wording of Brightwoods a bit better but because of where the new line starts I think it's not doing as well

Great ideas so far guys, keep um coming.

I'm probably the most active staff member as far as slogans go with my other account jefandlaurenrockharderthanmost, so I'm well aware of the frustrations that occur with this section of threadless.

This has been one of the projects we've been working on lately so I will post some of the ideas we've thinking about a little later.

It would be Ideal if threadless stops printing slogans that are obviously copy from another site, there are way too many sloganeers taht deserved a print and have not gotten one yet.

Also has anyone mention this:

Hey so here are some ideas that I've gathered from these blogs and from staff discussions, let me know what you guys think.

1. Having a three option vote, so instead of just a "I'd wear it" and "Um, Stupid" there would also be "Meh" or "Skip" button.

2. Limiting the number of slogans you can submit per day. I don't know what the limit would be but I think it should be something small enough to prevent people from just submitting a bunch of repetitive slogans, but large enough to not hinder the more serious submitters.

3. One thing we are already working on having some different tabs in which to view the main slogan page, so instead of just having the most recent slogans you could click on the "popular" tab or some other tabs that we come up with. We have a lot of data to play around with so we could even have like a "Weighted" tab where people who bought more type tees or who voted the most would have their votes count more.

4. A tagging system similar to the categories section if you go to the threadless catalog, but more along the lines of "puns", "jokes", "common phrases", "dirty jokes", etc. I'm thinking maybe the sloganeer could choose like threes tags when they are submitting their ideas.

5. I agree that a keyword search would be very helpful.

6. I'm sure there are a bunch more that I'm forgetting right now

For me the most frustrating part of type tees is submitting a slogan, getting like 10-20 votes in a few minutes, and then never having people vote on it again without promoting it. This is why I'm kinda just focusing on the voting process itself right now, then we can focus on some of the more organizational stuff later.

rossmat8
rossmat8 on Apr 28 '10 at 5:38pm
1. Skip is a great idea because sometimes you don't want to vote down a slogan on the front page, but you also don't really like it either.

2. Censorship is never the f*cking answer so I say no to any form of limits. Maybe in place of this would be like a little pop up that says "hey you've submitted 20 slogans and none of them are scoring well maybe give yourself a break" That way the people that know what they're doing will be fine, and the noobs that are throwing crap around would hopefully get the hint.

3. Great idea. Might I also suggest a Slumni tab. Where every time someone who has had a slogan printed puts a new slogan up you can view it there. Would be nice for the new people to see what people that have been successful are doing, and may help them get a better understanding of what works and what doesn't.

4. Great idea. I would suggest "observational humor" "one liner" "pun" "boobs" in addition to whatever else you've got

5. Awesome

6. Hidden percentages. It would seriously change the way voting is done. Rather than going to someone's page and clicking yes on everything about 50% and no on everything below people would have to actually read slogans.

7. Alumni or slumni type tee choices. The staff usually and by usually I mean you guys have missed on like 3 typetees out of all the prints so you guys do very good with your choices, but it would be interesting to get the community more involved on the "other" side of the site.

Great ideas you've got so far. The only one I don't like is #2. I don't submit a lot in a day, but I know when I first joined I'd spend hours a day just submitting terrible slogans because it was fun.

soloyo on Apr 28 '10 at 6:03pm

Disgruntled_Pacifist
Disgruntled_Pacifist on Apr 28 '10 at 8:13pm
Number two is a bad idea but dropping slogans at 20% by twenty I think is too soon. I've had slogans doing that bad then pick-up after that but a cut off would be good at some point. The rest of the ideas are a good start as well as what Ross suggested. I'm glad to see there are changes coming!
rossmat8
rossmat8 on Apr 28 '10 at 8:17pm
Yeah but 20 votes is usually the general public (i.e. those who buy shirts) everything after that is gotten through promotion and usually people who click the things you promote aren't going to vote you down. I drop anything that's under 50% so I'm a lot pickier than most people, but I just think if slogans automatically dropped the front page wouldn't be such a nightmare to visit

Maybe we could do this but only after it's been up for like a week or two, that way you still have time to promote it.

Sounds like a good idea. Also maybe adding a date or something on the slogan page. That way to end any debate over who submitted something first.

Sorry it's taken me a day or two to get my thoughts together on this.

A skip option would be valuable. Maybe also an option flagging something as a quote, or copy of another slogan which might bring those slogans to the staff’s attention and cut through some or the excess that are unsuitable for print.

I’m kinda of with Ross on the #2 point. I should admitt my bias on this. I also submit a lot on certain days so I’m guilty of putting a lot through the sub page at once.

I like the idea of having tabs, and I’d like to hear some more on this idea. I think more choices on the voting page would be a great idea.

I also like the idea of tagging like say I want to search for zombie slogans, or think outside the box idioms, etc. I like the idea of tags this way because I’d like to know if I’m in familiar territory when I’m submitting a slogan. One tries to be as original as possible and it helps to make sure.

I agree with the focus on the voting process. There are more things I’d certainly like to see Threadless pick up on with regard to slogans but I think the problems of promoting and gathering attention towards older slogans should be addressed as soon as possible.

Weird idea that I don't think can be done, but instead of having the possibility to vote on printed slogans, instead the slogan would have it's been printed under it, and you could click a button that linked to the tee.

Would it be helpful or unnecessary to have a recently voted slogans tab. Sometimes on the front page I read something too quickly and click no or accidentally click no on a new slogan after it scrolls up, and I think it would be handy to see the slogan we clicked no on just to make sure it sucked, or to see the slogan we just clicked yes on and see if the owner of said slogan got lucky, or is a gifted sloganeer. Alright I have found my mind works best after 3 AM, or maybe I just think it does, but I think this would be a good idea.

These are all excellent suggestions that I whole heartedly endorse.

I'd kinda like a cut-off time like the 90 days for designs, but I guess this would be hard to do with the 'yes or no' scoring function for slogans, not to mention the sheer volume of them. I just want closure!
