Whenever I tell someone that I'm an English Major they automatically ask me if I want to be a teacher. The answer is absolutely not. When I first got to college that was the plan and that's what landed me at Longwood University. I quickly learned that teaching wasn't really for me.

The second question usually is, "So are you going to be a writer?" Again, the answer is no. I would love to have a job where I can write something, anything, and that leaves me with enough spare time to write for myself. That said, I'm not a creative writer nor am I interested in journalism.

Last year I learned that I love Professional and Rhetorical Writing and so I've picked that as my concentration. It's a majorly interesting course of study that really delves into real world writing. I also like to deconstruct the meaning of nonliterary texts in order to see what they say about the "author/creator" and who they intend as their audience.

When looking through the catalog it's interesting to look at a design and see what size and style sold out first. I think that says a lot about who the design appeals to and about the designer as well. Who knows, maybe some day I'll write about that.

A text says nothing about its author.

My name is Nicola. I am also 21, and also hate the teacher question.

English Major Here. Well, doubled with Film.

I loved writing manuals. Did hospital manuals for a while. Depending on your bent, it can be a good job!

But, yeah. Manuals go through so many committees, if you can find 'me' in the emergency procedures manual of 2001 used in the hospitals I did it for, you have to be psychic. I couldn't even choose font.

A text says everything about the author because it is ultimatly the author who chooses what goes in and how it goes. It is how the author puts things together that guides the reader through the work. Everything is biased adn therein lies the beauty.

I'm an English major too. Most people are taken aback by that alone due to my being Asian.

And then people are taken more aback when I say I want to write. I guess I don't exude the qualities a writer possesses.

I overheard a conversation at work involving an English major. It was something like:

Some kid: "Hey, what are you working on?"

English major: "A forward for a cookbook."

SK: "WTF? Why?"

EM: "I don't know. I became an English major thinking I would be reading things like Faust and Faulkner. Instead, I'm reading Rachael Ray."
