Should I do this?

A band wants to buy two or 3 of my photos to use on an album cover?

The band has a low budget, but they aren't buying originals and I will be able to use them for my own purposes such as publications, so....I don't know about money when it comes to my work. Is $300 extremely extremely a ripoff?

awesome photos. It seems kind of reasonable if they are a smaller band. It would be some good portfolio, at least.

$300 sounds reasonable enough, especially if you're keeping the rights to the originals. :)

I dunno, it's hard to value your own work , i find. Best thing is do set yourself a pricing system and stick to it. $300 is certainly not too much to charge.

I think it's a fair price, and you could restrict the use to album art, if they want to use it for merch they'd have to pay more.

But then again I have no idea about photography related stuff.

Yeah i do agreee with ndstille. Having band stuff is great on your portfolio. Unless they really suck, of course haha

I think it's just for the front, and back, with possibly the insides. They kept saying they can't pay me much, the most is $300, so I am wondering what normal people charge. People in the BIZ. You know.

I agree with Baka and Hector.

Also, my sister is a professional photographer and what I've learned from her is that in the beginning, no price is too low. The most important thing is to be getting your name out there. So if they're crediting you in the liner notes (and providing contact info maybe?) I'd say you should think of the $300 as a happy bonus, and the real gain is the potential for more money in the future.

Also, consider they still have to do, or pay someone to do the design/layout .

$300 sounds like a pretty good price for photos that would otherwise be sitting in a Flikr album anyway. Do it. It's good exposure for your work.

300 seems fair enough for a band. I don't know much about selling photography, but as far as dealing with somewhat smalltime bands 300 is a good price to work with. you could just make sure you have a little contract that says you keep the rights to do what you want with the photo and they only have the rights to use it for the CD stuff.
