How would someone...
Go about asking their boss for a raise. I've never had to do it before, other places I have worked automatically did it every year.

At my current job I was hired to do photography/cashier work about a year ago. Since then I have become their graphic designer and been promoted to a supervisor position for the photography stuff, but haven't gotten any kind of pay increase.

Is there a proper way to bring it up, or things I should avoid saying/doing?

I don't know but from what you've said it certainly sounds like you're due one. You've taken on extra responsibility and your pay should represent that I think. It sounds like you've become a valuable member of their team, the worst they can do is say no.
