I know I score low on a lot of designs. I own up to that fact, readily. But I feel I have a pretty good idea of a wearable design and I will vote well for something that has a good concept, been executed expertly, infuses a bit of charm and/or humor, and shows the designer's talent and creativity. That all being said, should I really be surprised at the amount of votes this has after only 2 days?

SECRET of VEİL - Threadless T-shirts, Nude No More

It's been said to me recently that votes really don't mean anything if the staff make the final decision anyway. I'm sure that they use it to gage their audience... and then print accordingly. But I want to ask those who have been here a while what their take is on this.

number of votes doesn't mean much if everyone is voting low

Now really, 331 people want her to submit that?

I'm wondering what does Threadless need to change to make things harder to manipulate like this.

I'm thankful Threadless are clever enough to catch stuf like this. Maybe she's got a bunch of friends on another forum? I don't know what kind of statement this tee is trying to make.

Well 331 is the exact number of accounts that were created with the sole purpose of faux voting for this "designer"

I tried to Google translate it but it only gets half. Anyone know Turish? Or is it something similar but not the same? I get "snailshair is my brother" on one comment, which makes no sense.
squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jun 21 '09 at 9:29am
Actually, clicking on the profiles of those who have commented on that critique, many have scored 0 subs and some have scored a few giving a high average, so I don't think they're involved with a downvoting conspiracy, but these other 300 people are wildcards. They must've come from somewhere.

squatterjohn
squatterjohn on Jun 21 '09 at 10:01am
The next design in the queue had a similarly large number of votes, which does suggest to me that they targetted that one too. I don't think bringing a bunch of people in is cheating, unless you're offering them free internet in return like the guy before, or unless you're also encouraging them to downvote other subs, or if you only brought sixty friends but they made five fake accounts each. But in the end when Threadless chooses what to print they'll analyse that and I don't think a high score from an influx of 300 new people, who must be coming from some other forum like with British T-Rex, will impress them too much. But yeah, I don't think that this score will be adjusted down unless something else comes to light. Still, the problem is that with such low voting numbers now, things like this happen.

y'all have been really kinda harsh to these designs. that could print today, and would probably would have been a high scorer a couple years ago. I don't think most of the prints in the past six months have been the best designs around, but anytime someone blogs about not liking a printed design, they look like a total dick.

I dunno. they say to get your name out there and to get your friends to vote, which brings more traffic to threadless. People have 'vote me up on this other site' blogs here all the time, don't you think people in those communities get a little annoyed with that? but they deal with it just the same and it can certainly help threadless designers get printed elsewhere.

In the end, threadless does what they can to make everyone feel loved and welcome and they'll print what they want to print. Score-changes after the fact or not, threadless scoring is not limited to people that have already had a threadless account or people who have already purchased or won or submitted here.

Agreed! If they are real accounts That's fine with me, that is well with in the threadless model, it's actually encouraged, but if there are fake accounts involved then that isn't cool.

With the low voter numbers its easier to effect the scores, I wonder how British t Rex would have done now.

In the end the staff won't print designs that score high but don't really measure up. So the scores may piss you of but you can't fool the staff.

There's a difference between getting hundreds of your friends to join a site and vote your design up and do nothing else, and asking people already active in a tee design/voting community to take a look at a design on a similar site.
Bramish
   Bramish on Jun 21 '09 at 12:30pm

shakethesheets

I don't see much of a difference there, Bramish. Say it's a site they've not heard of before or don't otherwise participate in... is there still a difference?
Bramish
   Bramish on Jun 21 '09 at 12:31pm
I also agree with squatterjohn and Edword - it doesn't bother me that much because at the end of the day, Threadless aren't going to print something they don't think will sell, even if it scores 3+ or whatever, legitimately or not.

Ok. Well, because of the community here, it is akin to just asking your friends to vote you up somewhere else. and often they're at sites the internetfriends wouldn't frequent without such urging.

Bramish
   Bramish on Jun 21 '09 at 12:36pm
Maybe I'm wrong, but if I post a link on these blogs to a design I have up for voting elsewhere, I don't expect nor think hundreds of people here will then go and score that design highly regardless of what they really think of it. I think a few might go check it out and give and score it honestly, some might not vote at all, very few people would create an account purely to score my design, and most would not even follow my link.

But please look what this lady does, she's downvoting everyone else! "nanasee aka Emine is a 24.28 year old girl, has been a member since May 16, 2009, has scored 840 submissions, giving an average score of 0.21"
shakethesheets
shakethesheets on Jun 21 '09 at 12:40pm
Maybe not hundreds, but maybe hundreds of people already did like your design and wanted to see it printed somewhere, or a lot of people like you and want to see you win, or you keep bumping a blog asking them, and more people see it, or they consider you a friend and feel a certain obligation. Depends on the artist/design/site for sure, but it's undoubtedly possible to get a decent-sized following at another site purely from people here.
Edword
   Edword on Jun 21 '09 at 12:42pm
So check this out I did a lil quick math.

lets say 2 was the average with the the 600 votes that are regular votes = 1200

then the extra 300 were all 5's = 1500

1200 + 1500 = 2700

2700 / 900 = 3
